every night when he wakes up. He couldn't move when he saw them in the beginning or something like that. The ghosts did the same thing every night. I remember one would always get run over by something unseen and another would have blood dripping from it's mouth that would leave stains. The grown ups couldn't see anything that had to do with the ghosts. Later in the book he eats something and turns into a grown up and forgets about everything and couldn't see the ghosts anymore because he lost his innocence but one of the ghosts turn him back into a kid again. Something happens after that then it skips to when he is around 14 (I think he was originally 12) and he starts to see the ghosts again but one day he just forgets about them and goes on living thinking that the ghosts he had seen were only part of his childhood imagination and metaphorically leave his childhood behind.
When the boy was a kid he would create and play his own imaginary adventures that were described very well in the book and the ghosts would always end up in them somehow or something.
I'm pretty sure it was a book for adults but I read it when I was about 10.
