More money then cents

I originally was looking at used VW Jettas and Passats, but the more I looked, the more it appeared that VW had a quality problem with their vehicles and that their customer service was lacking.

I then went to my Ford dealer to check out the '08 Focus. My main concern was being able to sit comfortably in the car since I'm 6'1" tall. Surprisingly, I was able to sit in the driver's seat without bumping my head against the roof. The interior is well laid out, and I especially like the way Ford integrated the radio display into the center section of the dash. As far as trunk space goes, there appears to be ample room, plus the rear seats will fold down to provide that extra storage in case you have to put something long in the trunk.

The car also has Sirius radio (which I got spoiled on via DISH Network), and this dash display clearly shows the current channel along with song name and artist. The sound system definitely has a nice "bass" effect with the Sirius radio. There is also an MP3 jack which will enable you to feed music from your MP3 player into the car's sound system.

The SES model also includes the Sync system which I haven't messed around with yet, but seeing that the wife is looking to get a Bluetooth-capable phone soon, I'll probably have to dig out the User's Manual at some point and figure out how to use the Sync system.

With regards to the performance, the Focus handles well around curves, can enter the highway at decent speeds, and averages around 32 MPG while driving around 70 MPH. The Duratec 2.0L engine provides surprisingly good pickup which is a far cry from 20 years ago when 4-cyl engines were dogs out of the starting gate.

I think Ford has hit a home run with the Focus and their other 2008 model year vehicles (Fusion, Edge, Taurus, Super Duty, etc), and it's nice to see an American company be able to go head-to-head against the foreign car makers and actually beat them in price.
