has anyone has had good progress by learning to "play by ear" on the piano?

I'm a newbie. Trying to learn to play the piano by myself using a book. However, I also saw the "play it by ear method." How is this different that traditional learning (learning scales, reading notes). Has anyone made progress with it? - Thanks
