Has anyone had this happen?

Yesterday suddenly my finger started aching. I looked down at it and it was turning purple and swelling up. on my left ring finger. I had not injured it at all. I had to work hard to get my wedding ring off because the swelling was getting bigger by the second. The bottom half of my finger near where my ring turned purple. The pain was very bad. The pain started subsiding but it remained purple and swollen. This morning it is still swollen and very tender to touch. It's also still purple, although it's lighten some. This has happen 2 other times before on different fingers, fingers with no rings. It didn't have anything to do with the ring and it wasn't too tight.

It's like my vein had a clot or exploded or I got a sudden seemingly unprovoked hematoma.

Does anyone know what causes this or has anyone had this happen? I did some research on the internet and read quite a few people this has happen to, but know one seemed to know why.

just to make totally certain that you simply don't have an actual clot that could be stemming way above that finger, an ultrasound done on all vessels that would lead to that finger just really need to be fully checked out.

my mom had a very bizzarre thing occur about three years ago where her finger, out of the blue started to actually turn black at the tip, then progressed further back. had no clue as to what could be casuing it til her husband took her to the ER and they did an US, (they use the doppler tool on it to check for the possible clots) and they found a huge clot way up in the subclavian that is actually up kind of by the neck into the top of shoulder area? luckily they were able to stent the area and she got good solid blood flow back. i still have absolutely no idea how a clot way up there could have ONLY shown itself at the tip of her finger but it did. but i would seriously get that one US done so you simply KNOW what could be causing this. this most definitely is related to something vascular(could be part vascular and something else too), its just a matter of tracking it down using doppler US. just show up at your local ER, i am certain they will know what to do for you.

i just really would not wait on this and just go to the ER. when there is just ANY chance or possibility of clots somewhere, they can break off (or pieces of) and travel to places where clots just should not ever be like the heart and the brain or lungs. there is just that chance that this 'could' be there and that needs attention now vs waiting on this. its just one of those better safe than sorry types of situations. i hope this is not anything major, but i seriously would get this checked very soon. good luck to you and please let us know how you are doing and what you find out. Wow that's amazing what happen to your Mom. I went to my Gynocologist yesterday for another reason and she said basically the same thing you did, to not let it go unchecked. Then I went somewhere socially with an Internist MD that acted like it was no big deal. Seems like it totally depends on who you talk to. It's frustrating. I think I will call my Dr and see what he recommends. My left arm hurts a lot too, which is the side where this finger is. It aches and I always thought it was because of a bad shoulder I have. I had surgery on the shoulder 1 1/2 years ago for torn rotater cuff, Arthritus, and bone spurs (wow I'm a mess). I will follow up on here if I get to the bottom of it. Thank so much for your response.
