Has anyone had this done?

Hi everyone. I have allergies and I made the mistake of working out in my yard last spring without a mask. I've been paying for it since then by not being able to smell or taste. I went to the doctor and he had a ct scan done. I have what is called a "mucous merabrane cyst". He sent me to an ear, nose & throat doctor this week. He checked my sinuses,etc. and said I have a crooked nose and there was two things he could do. One is send me to an allergist and two is do surgery and straighten out my nose and remove the cyst. On the first option, I told him, No! I don't want to go to an allergist because he'll tell me to get rid of my cat and I'm not doing that and I don't want to argue with him. He told me he couldn't guarantee that I would be able to taste and smell after that. I asked him if I could just have the cyst removed because I figure I've had a crooked nose all my life and it hasn't bothered me. He said, "No, because if I just remove the cyst and you still can't taste, you'll be wondering if straightening the nose would have helped". He told me he would go in and put some stints in. Of course, when you're sitting there and have the opportunity to ask all kinRAB of questions, your mind goes blank or at least mine did. Just what kind of recovery will this involve? He told me it would be done as outpatient but I wonder what the recovery is like. I ask this because my husband is sick and neeRAB my attention. I don't want to be where I can't look after him. Did this help you with your symptoms? I can't help but think it's the cyst because I've not had any problems smelling and tasting until I worked out in my yard. They had me using nasal sprays but those didn't work or at least they haven't yet. I asked this doctor would he have it done and he told me no, but he didn't say why and of course I failed to ask. The "crooked nose" deal just shocked me so I forgot everything apparently. I went in to get a cyst removed I hoped and came out with a crooked nose. :( How did this work out for you?
 
Titchou, you said you've had the surgery done and there wasn't anything to it. Would you mind telling me exactly what is involved? For example, how was your recovery and how long did it take you to recover? Were you able to function and if not, how long did it take? Will I be able to help my husband now during his recovery if I had it done soon? He has been in the hospital and is very weak. This is why I'm asking so many questions. He wants me to go ahead and have it done but I want to make sure I can still help him if I had it done now. I hope I'm not overdoing it with questions to you. I thought about going ahead and doing it and then if that didn't do it, go to an allergist as a last resort. Thanks for your time and I apologize if I'm overdoing it. :)
 
Well, first of all, any allergist worth his salt is not going to tell you to get rid of the cat. Mine didn't. He did ask if the cat could stay out of the bedroom. 14 years later the cat (longhaired, BTW) is still sleeping with me and I'm still going to the same allergist. Took allergy injections and they work great.

And there really isn't any reason to get the cyst removed without taking care of the deviated septum at the same time. It's not that big a deal - I've had it done - and then both will be over and done with and you won't have to worry about it down the road.
 
Going ahead with the surgery and then seeing if you need more allergy treatment afterward sounRAB like a reasonable plan.

Just how much care does your husband need, and is there someone who can take over for you while you go for the surgery?

I agree with Titchou about the allergy shots--they're perfect for people who can't or don't want to take antihistamines.

I'm on them currently because my allergies have gotten a lot worse the last year and I can't tolerate allergy medicine. I go once a week for 6 months, then once a month for a couple years. I get a shot, then I get an itchy bump, like a mosquito bite, for a couple hours, and that's it. Some people don't get the bump.
 
He's not able to walk very well unless he uses his walker. He has occasionally fell and I've had to catch him or get him up but that rarely happens. Mostly, I'm fixing meals & plates, carrying them & his medications to him, and helping him get around sometimes on his weaker days. Then a lot of little things. Yes, I've had several people offer to come and stay with him anytime I need them to. I just want to make sure I can still do what I need to do for him. Thanks for your reply JaneWhite1 also.
 
I can't help with the cyst thing, sorry, but why not see the allergist? He might tell you to get rid of the cat, but probably only if your are severely allergic to it. If you are not, there would be no reason for him to do that, & you might find out something else that could help you.
 
You'd need to talk with your doctor but most people don't even stay overnight in the hospital. You might be sort of worn out for a couple of days after but that's about it. If you've got someone who can stay with you and your husband, you shouldbe able to get along fine. I would tell you my experience but it was so long ago and they do the surgery differently now (40 years ago) that it really wouldn't be relevant.
My biggest issue was the packing and doctors don't much even use it any more.
 
I understand Titchou. I misunderstood. I just assumed you had it done more recently. You're right. It would be different today. He did tell me I would go home the same day. I explained to him I needed to take care of my husband and why. He told me I should be able to still do it but, I'm the type of person that likes to speak with someone who has actually HAD it done rather than just taking the doctors word for it. Thank you to both of you for your replies. I was hoping someone who had the crooked nose part done would respond. I didn't explain fully to the doctor or to you why I don't want to see an allergist. I have had allergies all my life but, I also am HIGHLY sensitive to medications. Whatever the side effects are, affect me tremendously. For example, if drowsiness is a side effect, I go around like a zorabie just on a portion of the medication and that's just one side effect. Another example of my sensitivity to medications is, I have epilepsy. My neurologist took me off of my seizure medications because the side effects are worse than my seizures. So, when I can, I try to stay away from as many medications as possible and I'm guessing that he would put me on medications and it would be for the rest of my life. Thanks again for your replies.
 
Well, that might make you an even better candidate for allergy shots. They work wonderfully for most people. It isn't a med but rather the allergen in orde to desensitze you - something like a vaccination.
