Has anyone ever worked or went to a college with a VERY long daily commute?

I am starting a graduate medical scientist program in January. The program is very challenging, and from what I understand, work is virtually impossible if you want to keep your grades up (the dean actually requires you sign a waiver to work since students are in training eight hours a day). The city it's in is pretty expensive and I would require a ridiculous amount of loans to live there. Even if I worked part time, it wouldn't come anywhere near enough to cover the rent and bills.

My mother offered to let me live with her for the two years duration. But she lives two and a half hours away. I will try this, but the commute seems daunting (five hours round trip). But, I would only need loans to cover gas and tuition. I would be looking at borrowing less than 10K instead of 50K+.

Has anyone tried this? What was your experience.
