I work at a bookstore in the Orlando area where a pretty weird transaction keeps happening and I was wondering if anyone else had ever heard of this.
The last four days in a row a woman (in her 40-50’s, dark hair, dressed casually) has come into our store and purchased a 50 dollar gift card. She hands the cashier two 20’s and a 10. Once the cashier rings it up, TAKES HER MONEY, and is about to hand the woman her freshly purchased gift card with the receipt and everything she makes up an excuse and rushes out the store. She doesn’t take the receipt, the card, or her money. She leaves EVERYTHING behind and walks out of the store empty handed.
She always targets a different cashier so it wasn’t until yesterday that we discovered that it was the same lady.
Then today a young girl comes in and buys a 50 dollar gift card. This transaction goes smoothly. (i.e. she pays and takes the card with her) Then a few hours later an older woman (we suspect the same one from the description of the cashier that has come in the last few days and left without her cards) enters the store, buys a 10 dollar book, pays with a gift card and then rushes out only taking the book but leaving a gift card with 40 remaining dollars with the employee. Come to find out the gift card is the same exact card that was sold to the young girl just hours earlier.
All of us at the book store are utterly confused. By leaving her money and the activated card with 50 bucks on it, she is not gaining anything. And we now have 4 gift cards in our safe totaling 190 bucks! This whole thing is so weird and I was wondering if this type of thing is happening to anyone else. Maybe it’s some kind of weird scam or something.
