I've visited Southern Cal on a number of occasions (L.A., Anaheim, etc.) and when driving around in the area, I repeatedly get the sense that there's something big or important that I'm not seeing "just around the corner". Not scary or anything like that - - more like something grand or spectacular, except I never seem to actually see it. As far as attractions go, I've been to Disneyland, seen Downtown L.A., and driven through some areas of Beverly Hills, but that's about it. Now that I think about it,I wonder if this is indicative of the the atmosphere created by Hollywood, famous actors and such? Thanks for any insight.

Has anyone else noticed this peculiarity about Southern California?

I think it's probably because you may be from a smaller town and the vastness and such tends to ignite peoples senses. I mean . . it really is amazing how we've built a sprawling metroplolis that goes on for miles and miles and miles in all directions . .

yep, once you've visited a few exciting places in SoCal, (like Beverly Hills) you might start thinking, "there's got to be something right around the corner." Like, in Hollywood and Beverly Hills there are famous places right-around-the-corner from each other. Even though some of the surrounding neighborhoods may be kinda dumpy and ugly, downtown Beverly Hills and Santa Monica and Hollywood can seem "once-in-a-lifetime" to tourists.
When you're talkin' Disneyland, you're talkin' Orange County, which is so freakin' spread-out. Again, depending on where in Orange County -- as in L.A. -- you might run into ugly, dumpy neighborhoods.

I think it is because there is always something going on... where as in other areas of the county that's not the case. It might not be big things... but you can find events for every day = like Wed night there is a restuarant in West Hollywood that has celebrity bingo and a "celebrity" shows up.
But most areas, aren't like that... even touristy areas:
Santa Fe, NM = a super fantastic place to visit... after 6pm the sidewalk rolls up and there is NOTHING to do except go out to dinner. In a future life, I'm going to open an art gallery that is open until 10pm just to attract all the tourist roaming the street in the evening with money burning a hole in their pocket.
Bend, OR = check out the community events that happen in the area, lots of fun activities. But they are on Fri, Sat, Sun, with an occasional Thurs...
But most areas, aren't like that... even touristy areas:
