Has anybody ever purchased a old piece of crap car, and it lasted longer than expected?

I'm talking about a real clunker with very high miles and the mechanic gave you a expensive list of repairs that made you feel like you would be stranded on the side of the road, just to find out maybe a year to two years later that car was still rolling pretty strong? I've seen this a lot but I guess you never know? Some cars seem to keep going and going despite what mechanics recommend!
