Haruhi Suzumiya Sequel Confirmed (or is it?)

Well, three years later, they finally got around to it. This April (most likely), the S.O.S. Brigade is coming back. Japanese commercials advertising the March issue of Newtype confirm that the magazine's cover story will be revealing the first details of a sequel to The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Comments after the quote:

Well, obviously a lot of otaku have been wanting this since the first series, so I'm rather surprised that it took them this long to get it going for real. Personally, I have some interest though I'm not dying with anticipation. The original Haruhi series was a surprise, corabining a very strange narrative approach (i.e. the now famous out-of-order storytelling) with a blend of eccentric stories and the occasional parody from episode to episode. I'm really wondering if they can repeat that sort of thing a second time, mostly because of all the otaku-centric merchandising that has gone on.

Now that Haruhi has become a huge phenomenon among the fandom, the big question looms: will they continue making a show that appeals to otaku crowd while daring to be different in various ways, or will it be written for the crowd that has fallen in love with the tropes and "moe" elements of the first series? For instance, will they milk Hare Hare Yukai some more or come up with something that is both amusing and different?

A key part of this issue may be whether this series will be "based on" the original light novels, or if they will go for straightforward adaptations of the source material. I gather that this is what the first series basically was, and I would hope that they would repeat that and not let the series' new popularity impact things too much.

They could make this the next Lucky Star, or it could get lost in the shadow of the original series. The imminent details will be interesting. I don't doubt that it will at least be funnier than much of what tries to pass for anime comedy. Also, the return of Kyon's wit will be welcome.

Rumor is that the new season of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya will be based off the 4th light novel, called The Vanishment (or Disappearance, as it's often called) of Haruhi Suzumiya. Plot summary from Wikipedia:

And if the rumor is true, then it sounRAB awesome! I'm super excited for it; time traveling is always fun.

Hmm, if that's true, that's a good sign. That plot seems sufficiently kooky and weird, and in theory it wouldn't allow the second series to settle into a status quo routine.

Adapting the novels would be the wisest course of action, lest the series fall prey to bad writing. You have scripts, use them.

All right!!

I just watched the advertisement since I have a Nico Nico Account, I gotta say I love me some Haruhi Suzumiya , so I'm looking forward to this, especially Haruhi with long hair (dazed), though Nagato's becoming a favourite for me too, anyway I look forward to the new series, and hope KyoAni can manage to still keep the series up for another 14 episodes, because it's an all around good series, the novels especially!! (the manga's funny but not so much)

And strangely, I do act a bit like Haruhi (and also Konata from Lucky☆Star (my persona is a dead ringer to hers) and Son Goku from DRAGONBALL (all the time), and sometimes Kyon and Koizumi, I know bizarre corabination), in fact I made my own SOS Brigade with my frienRAB (and don't worry, I maybe as crazy as her, but I didn't force them to join)

I'm not sure how they'd get much more than a half-dozen episodes out the Dissappearance novel, so what I hope is they have enough sense to take the same approach as the original series - pad the main arc with neat short stories from the other light novels to keep the in-episode pacing tight.

It'd also be brilliant if they setup the plotline from the Disassociation of Suzumiya Haruhi in at the end of this series to ensure a 3rd series.

The 4th novel is pretty awesome. But umm How is it that a second season is happening and it's announced TWO MONTHS prior to it airing?

If this is some ellaborate NewType/Kyoani April Fools Day Joke I am going to japan with kerosene and a lighter.

Long story short its been almost 3 years since the first anime and at one point I think we were supposed to hear more about this anime last winter, and it was annouced much earlier than that, so its been under wraps for awhile.

(Although last winter they did came up with clever tricks with the website, and an awesome live action video showing Haruhi and Kyon at night on the school grounRAB, caught on security camera.)

(Three worRAB: Watch The Buildings)

Good, maybe people will stop ripping on Clannad for taking "precious Haruhi time." Ugh.

Now to deal with the Fullmetal Panic people....

And also, can't wait. Second Favorite story of the novels for me.

It's Full Metal Panic, Shoji Gatoh got the inspiration for the name from the movie "Full Metal Jacket". It's not one word "Fullmetal", that would be with Fullmetal Alchemist.

Yes, I am one of the FMP people.

They're just waiting until no one cares anymore. Then, when the 2nd season is a complete failure, they'll have an excuse to not produce a 3rd season. Perfect strategy to maximize profit.
