Harry Potter

Took my parents and my ten year old son to see the latest Harry Potter. First time son had seen one at the cinema though apart from Goblet my parents and I had seen all on the big screen.

We all thoroughly enjoyed this one - I had to explain a few of the gaps to son, who hasn't read the book (I thought this was the weakest of the books and enjoyed the film more than the book). I was surprised they left out the prophecy and that it could equally apply to Neville or Harry so assume in the long run this isn't important.

Given the length of the book and the time of the film I think they did a really good job of condensing this and am looking forward to the Half Blood Price (loved this book so hope the film lives up to it)
 
I've just come back from seeing this and I was impressed. Not quite as good as PoA I have to say but as the 5th book is the longest and what I always thought would be the hardest to adapt to cinema (because of the political themes, and because Harry's main battle is really within himself) I was impressed. Compared to GOF which really should have been better than it was.

Although lots was cut I felt the film flowed well (if a bit fast paced at times) and wasn't disjointed and unclear like GOF was. However more of the order would have been better, particularly Sirius as his death didn't make the emotional impact it should have done (I was more upset when Cedric died and he was a much less important character)

The trio were at there best this film. Emma has improved massivly since GOF and is no longer acting with her eyebrows (I really wish she wasn't given so many lines though as she is still the weakest of the trio). Rupert was good but didn't have much to work with but at least his character was slightly more serious. Daniel was fantastic.

They set the main story up well, right vs easy choices and frienRABhip vs isolation. The start with Harry alone in the grass, to the end with the contrast between his choice to love and voldermorts choice to be alone.

The effects were brilliant and the film was visually great (although in a very different way to PoA).

The new casting was spot on with Tonks, Bellatrix and Umbridge. Luna was good but not great. I would have liked more Ginny and more Snape, but I suppose HBP is their film, no point setting things up that aren't important in OotP.

I loved the little details to like Ginny's disapointment when Cho was mentioned, and the Patil twins crying, as well as Neville's determination and Ginny shown to be a very powerful witch. Generally the characterisation was the strongest in this film.

All in all a great film. Now I just can't wait to see what Yates does with HBP and Snape.
 
I thought the prohecy had something about being marked as the chosen one ("the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal"). Dumbledore said Voldemort had chosen Harry even though the prophecy could apply to Neville. Harry was then marked by the first attack.



I really enjoyed the Half Blood Prince but remember thinking it would be hard to film. I just remember it being a lot of talking about Voldemorts history and plans with a brief action scene at the end.
 
I thought it was the best film yet, and I've already been to see it twice!
It was really well done considering the size of the book and everything they had to put in.
I loved Luna, she was near perfect, and the last 20 minutes or so were excellent.
From someone who's never read the books, my mum said that it was more enjoyable than the last film and she might even decide to give the books a go.
I'll probably go and see it a third time after Deathly Hallows comes out.
 
Life at Hogwarts has to be shown in a way that services the story, the story being about HARRY and his isolation and battles against Umbridge and Voldemort. These things you mention are unimportant to the story, if they kept in every little thing like this, then the film would have been bloated and a chore to sit through. The only thing I truly think they needed to keep in this film was a lonnger talk with Dumbledore at the end and perhaps underlined the importance of occulmency more.
 
As someone who hasn't read the book, it seemed to sit together just fine. I wonder if it's the difference between having an exection and opinion as to what is the 'core' of the story before seeing the flick.
 
See that's so odd, I was talking to a friend of mine today who hadn't read the books and he didn't understand anything. He kept asking 'who was Helena BC in it?she turned up out of nowhere' and 'what was that big 'A' building?' Yet I've read posts by a lot of people who haven't saying they got it and thought it was great. I normally look to what people who haven't read the books thought to tell if the movie works, but it seems a bit mixed on that front this time.
 
I saw this last week and I have to say I think its been the best film so far. IMO, the 5th book is the weakest and definitely my least favourite and i hated the goblet of fire movie so i was unsure about seeing this.

I know a lot was left out but i didnt really miss it. As opposed to the movie of GoF i had to think about what had been changed or dropped from the book. I thought the film flowed really well, and the action scenes were sensational. Daniel Radcliffe improves so much with every film.

I have to disagree with some of the posters here, I personally didnt rate Helena Boham Carter, i imagined Bellatrix to be more evil and more dark looking...she just didnt scare me or strike me as entirely evil the way the written character does. Tonks wasn't really what i imagined either, i found her a bit "meh" whereas in the books i really like her. I guess everyone has their own ideas of the characters though.

One last thing i'd say is that i liked Gambon's dumbledore a lot more in this film than in the past, where i thought he played it a bit more brutal and harsh than i think dumbledore is.
 
yea i agree with you, the half blood prince will be a strange film to watch as it reverts back to the past a lot so wonder how it will look, like a dream, all floaty...not sure how its going be. plus making the characters look younger all the time must be extra work.
 
I wasnt actually looking forward to this film as out of all the books OOTP was my least favourite. Once again the Director works wonders it was fantastic, loved every bit of it. I think Daniel is brilliant as Harry, infact i cant even name them individually, from Severus to Seamus all the cast did a fantastic job. The special effects were great, oh and when Harry reacted to loosing Sirius with the no noise screams i was welling up, wonderful moment. Wonderful film!
 
I went to see it last night and I didn't think it was as good as everyone made it out to be! I didn't think it was anywhere as near as good as the book and they missed out loaRAB of good stuff that was soo funny in the book! I know they have to cut it down otherwise we would all be in the cinema for about 5 hours! I did like it I just thought it was going to be better!
 
Finally got to see the film at long last. I loved it and it is my favourite so far. It was my favourite book too until last weekend.

I vowed I would never be a purist when I watched LotR films... so I also had to apply it to Order of the Phoenix. :p There WAS so much changed but I'm going to class films and books as separate entities. I must otherwise I'd be picking points left right and centre.

So hem hem :D the FILM. I thought the acting was the best so far especially from Dan. I find him maturing into his role really well as each film progresses. Alan Rickman as Snape was breathtaking, he just draws you to him when he's on screen it's amazing. Jason Isaacs was deliciously evil, Michael Gambon - another fine performance from him. Imelda Staunton was excellent and the girl who played Luna was a breath of fresh air.

I must say though that I didn't think Voldemort was scary enough in this film :confused: even though Ralph Fiennes played him very well.

I also got such a surprise to hear Kreacher speak in a posh upper class accent. I found myself looking round the screen wondering who was speaking. :p

I want to go see this film again. :D

I must admit i said a similar thing, Richard Harris was always going to be a hard act to follow, but he portrayed D, as a much softer character, then again though Gambons done an excellent job, and i suppose the films are getting alot darker now so Dumbledore was never going to stay as the gentle Professor we knew him as.

So im putting the harshness down to the darker films :D
 
I have to say it was worth the money to go and see it in London (Gold Class at the Vue @ o2) - fantastic effects and the original three are much more professional than they used to be.

Great new casting and the flashbacks were handled perfectly.
 
I have saw the film twice now, have to say loved it more the second time but I think its one of the best ones yet, they have cut a hell of a lot out tho.

As for the book, I finished it in 11 hours something like that. Its amazing I couldnt put it down.

amazing loved both just sad there is no more books, but we have another two films to go.
