Doing publicity for a film is a fundamental part of modern cinema, and is normally written into the contracts of the actors. Most actors hate doing it, as it's extremely time consuming, repetitive and tiring - but are obliged by the studio. It'll have taken some pretty good negotiating from his agent to get him out of it if he does none for this film.
