Harry Potter 6 is a LETDOWN!!!

Haven't read this forum until now, as I wanted to watch the film with a clear mind and form my own opinion.

Saw it this morning and agree, it did seem to focus on the fact the 3 main characters are growing up, getting into relationships etc (like the book; but the book and not the film had the space to include everything else).

I treat the books and films seperately. I can understand why they chopped a lot of the book out, but I was a bit disappointed and surprised to see that Dumbledore's funeral (with the centaurs on the edge of the fobidden forest giving their own tribute) was not included. Also imo, could have done with a bit more on the HBP, it's barely mentioned, with a short few line explanation by Snape towarRAB the end. The end was a bit disappointing.

Also, am I dreaming, but in trailers previously, I saw Mr Weasley running through fire shouting 'that's my daughter!'. That seemed quite powerful scene, but that wasn't in the film.

Also could have done with more Snape and Luna (OK, I'm biased, they're my favourite characters). :)

Overall, imo, wasn't the best HP film, wasn't totally true to the book, but I can live with that as I didn't expect it to. Still enjoyed the film itself, as it was mainly thoughout, a decent watchable film.
 
I actually really liked the film. It was pretty much my favourite.

I have always understood that all the films would have to miss out big parts of the books because it just couldn't all be stuck into one film. But personally I think that the bits they decided to include were better picked then in some of the other films.

I had gone off of Harry, Ron and Hermonie in film 3 but I think this is the first film I could actually watch them without getting annoyed by the way one of the actors were acting.

I think they had enough of the flash backs even though I would have prefered more and enough of the other 'growing up' bits.

I would have liked more about the Half Blood Prince as I do want them to do Snape properly in the last film (or how ever they split the last two films) but I think they did alright with Snape and what they did include still keeps his character on the road that he neeRAB to be on. If they had totally ignored that he was the half blood prince then I probably would have had problems with it.

I liked the Burrow scene, ok it was very random and totally not needed but I did like it. Helena Bohen Carter is one of my favourite actresses and when ever she was on I just really loved her.

They did kind of put the idea of Lupin/Tonks out there, but as I didn't like them getting together in the books anyway I'm not too worried :p. A bit annoyed there was no Bill/Fleur but I'm going to wait to see if they do appear in the next movie before I actually get annoyed by the lack of Bill.

I liked how they had a good balance of humour and drama and really enjoyed watching it. Where as I've always came out of the other movies and felt let down. It was really watchable and for a change I didn't come out going 'I wish they'd put this in' or 'They missed this out'.
 
I thought it started terribly slowly but picked up nicely once there was a comprehensible plot to follow. It did look (and sound) like it had been edited in a hurry, with scenes ending very suddenly and music cutting off mid-note. Was there pressure to get the film under two-and-a-half hours (it's 153 minutes)?
 
i have thought of that as well - WB are certainly not going to let the HP franchise end with TDH part 2 in 2011 (when ever it is!). No way! in about 10 - 15 years, there may be a TV show remake. I cant see them remaking the movies (i know in the present climate of movie remake after movie remake, but these films are very profitable; they are all within the top 22 list of highest grossing movies of all time - WB wont want to over shadow or try to out do their gloden movies with a remake so quickly).

so a TV show may very well happen. Just imagine, a 7 series long run of all 7 books, spanned into 26 episodes per series. it would be interesting to see.
 
No, sorry, it's ridiculous. This is the 6th film they've been in and very few, if any, people are going to be watching this as the first one. You don't need to let your audience know who these two are by now.

They've managed to write dialogue for them in previous movies that shows their closeness without constantly doing this. The 'back and forth, going along the same thought line' stuff has always worked very well. It just seemed very odd this time because nearly all their dialogue was done in unison and, imo, completely unnecessarily so.
 
I really liked it.

The only thing that bugs me is Steve Kloves obsession with Hermione. It was RON who said they would go with Harry at the end! Not that Hermione wasn't in agreement, but I was very upset that they had him standing in the background looking frightened and saying NOTHING.

And Harry and Hermione are good frienRAB, but they didn't sit around confiding in each other about their love lives. Blech!

Aside from that and the WTF opening diner scene...it was a good film.
 
so the new movie will perhaps start with their wedding anyway. the characters are not all that important - and having a wedding at the start would mean nothing - only establish these characters, so they can interact in the finale.
 
I agree that the film really was nothing like the book which really irritated me as I found myself just critising bits as they were presented wrongly. However I do think that the books and the films should be treated seperatley as otherwise the film just enRAB up as a disapointment when actully I think it's really good.
 
I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt it was a letdown! All my frienRAB enjoyed it but I'm afraid I didn't particularly..

Half Blood Prince was my favourite book so expected it to be a good film but alas :cry:

For me, Slughorn was the biggest disappointment.. Nothing like the Slughorn I was expecting in looks or personality.
 
Add another disappointed viewer here. My ten year old sol was gutted at how slow and meandering it was with the final ending and Dumbledore's funeral being clipped. I just found the whole thing boring with Ginny being the worst offender for bad acting. Though I don't like the Harry/Ginny romance anyway as it seems unnecessary, at least in the book she had a bit of fire and their romance built up to something. This was just dull - a snog in an empty room and her flat, vacuous lines floating out... I suppose the character is being downplayed because there isnt much of her in the last book?

I thought the boy who played the teenage Tom Riddle acted all the other teens off the screen with just a slight lift to his eyebrow..
 
I love the books. Am a bit meh about the films usually. BUT I actually think David Yates is doing a very good job where he has a mountain of material to try to translate to screen. He's got the cinematography spot on now, and although I used to get annoyed by added scenes instead of missing scenes (my biggest bugbear being the shortened Shrieking Shack scene in POA), I've learnt to accept them for what they are - seperate entities.

Anything important (which to be fair is pretty much just the Horcrux deduction) they will find a away to get these into the 1st Deathly Hallows to stretch the action in those - otherwise there'd just be a lot of camping going on.

I enjoyed HBP when I saw it last night. I didn't really miss the Gaunts, which I thought I would. I tend to ensure I don't re-read the "current" movie's book for a year before or after it comes out, specifically because it means I can go in with a more open mind. Since I've started doing that I've enjoyed the films heaps more.

Oh, and I've just read that JK Rowling WAS going to write a scene with the Burrow being destroyed, then decided not to for one reason or another. Since I read that, I'm ok with them putting it in as it was almost like a deleted scene from the book.
 
The point is that PLOT POINTS are left out in favour of crap thought up by WB.

I mean if people want to watch a dumbed down version of Harry Potter, that's fine.

Some of us would like films that do justice to the books.
 
I saw the film today and i enjoyed it. I just didn't understand the significance of Snape being the Half Blood Prince. Is that important for some reason ? Also why did Harry all of sudden feel he had to get rid of the book full advanced magic spell's ?
 
It's not a PG. It's a 12. There hasn't been a PG Harry Potter film since Chamber of Secrets.

My 5 year old has recently seen Philosophers Stone for the first time and we are currently reading it as his bedtime story. I will let him watch Chamber of Secrets but that is it for a good few years.

Personally I was surprised to see SO many young children last night when I went to see HBP.
 
I actually really enjoyed this one considering a few people were disappointed with it, I liked the balance of dark and comedic moments. The last one was one of my favourites too. I think they've got progressively better - 1 and 2 were good but they seemed to be more family-oriented and about magic/fantasy.

They've got to cut bits or it'd be ridiculously long, it's not like I knew what to expect anyway as I've only read the first 3.
 
Same! When I saw the first one I remember being really disappointed that it didn't follow the book *exactly* but after that I tend to just focus on the bits that they do include ("oh, they decided to include the bit with Hermione and the birRAB, sweet!") and just appreciate it. As someone else has mentioned, the books are concentrated on Harry's viewpoint, and so the storytelling on the screen neeRAB to be translated differently. Don't get me wrong, I like to have a rant about what bits I don't think they did quite right or parts that I would've liked to have seen included, but on the whole it's a different experience. If you want all the detail, just pick up the book again.
