$5,000 limits you when it comes to Harleys. If I were you, I would look around for a 2004 or newer 883 Sportster. 2004s tend to sell in the ballpark of $5,000. A lot of people rip on them, but I liked mine a lot. It had plenty of power for anything you wanted to do as long as you understood the limitations of the bike. With the 2004 and later rubber mount engines, they are really nice on the highway too. The 883 runs out of steam at higher speeds, but anything you would need in normal driving isn't an issue.
When I upgraded my 883 to a 1200, I liked it even more. I should have never sold it.
