Hardcover books or paperbacks?

I'm already starting a book collection but I tend to buy paperbacks. I choose them because I can wrap it with a plastic cover to preserve its covering unlike hardcovers that already have a book jacket so it shouldn't be covered anymore. I don't want my books to be dirty later on.

But I also heard that paperbacks are cheaper because they become yellowish in time. Is that true? I want to have a collection with a classic feel and I want it to last longer. What should I buy, Hardcover or Paperbacks? What are their advantages and disadvantages?

Also, please tell me how to preserve books to make them last longer, if not forever.
