Hard drive vs flash drive for long term backup?

I have probably less than 16GB of important data on my laptop I'd like to backup. Since a 16GB flash drive is cheaper than an external hard drive I figured I'd just get a flash drive. Is there any reason why I should go with a hard drive instead? I know hard drives are faster but I won't be accessing the data very often, so that's not really a problem.

thanks for any advice!

A hard drive is a mechanical device and prone to mechanical failure. Or failure to mis-handling. Not so with a thumb drive.
