Hard Candy

What was pretentious about it? It was hardly pretending to be an art film, more like an old exploitation revenge flick of the 70s.

well your thought is rubbish! only kidding, I can see why people would think its bad. I think you have to be in the mood for a film like this as well, you dont wanna be eating Italian meatballs thats for sure :D

I didn't particularly think it was claiming to say something deep, it was about a little girl doing f*cked up things, mostly it was going for creepy thrill, not deep thoughts.

I think if it was just supposed to be "little girl does f*cked up things" then they probably would have speeded up the dull exposition and gone straight to the torture, maybe even added a few more kills at the start, and skipped the sermonising.

But ok, if that is the films only intention, which I doubt, then the only pretentiousness comes from the hundreRAB of internet reviewers who have apparently mistaken a creepy "thrill ride" for something much deeper.

Watched this film a few years ago after a friend recommended it to me. I found it to be very strange but very good. Obviously more scary for guys than it would be for girls. But I like the fact that they pretty much left it all open so you could make up your own conclusions.

Hayley kept accusing Jeff of being a paedophile, and he kept denying it. No matter how much she tortured him or searched his home she could not find any evidence to support her claims. Thats what makes the film so interesting the whole "is he or isn't he" dilemma. And even the ending to the film you are still left wondering.

Did he hang himself because he was guilty, or because he wanted it all to be over.

I love this movie. Was reccomended to it by someone when i was talking about how much i loved Juno

Really good. Kept me on my seat. Loved the ending

Found it slow and pretentious. Simplistic moralising masquerading as spontaneous dialogue doesn't do it for me. No one talks like that (apart from Jeremy Kyle).

or maybe you should just accept others have different opinions to you and quit patronising. I know you're not being nasty but it's irritating nevertheless.

For me the film sucked big time, end of discussion, Lol.

Yeah I knew you were just wanted to make it clear that no matter what mood I was in I wouldn't have enjoyed that film. Shan't be giving it another go either - that's already nearly 2hrs of my life wasted.:(

yep, nothing worse than the feeling of waste when watching something that doesnt appeal. I was forced to sit though The Holiday the other day and i had that exact feeling, there was no escape either, and i had to pretend i liked it lol

Not sure what you think a pretentious film is supposed to be. Go watch something like elephant or some cr@p by lars von triers if you want to see pretentious. Its more than just skipping explosions that makes something pretentious. It can be pretending to be deep when there is not even a basic understanding of the concepts at hand by the director, as in elephant. Its generally flinging sh*t at the wall and hoping someone else will interpret your bs as genius.

It was an interesting idea for a film and very well acted but I did start to lose interest by the end of it and didn't care if he killed her, she killed him or they killed each other.
It didn't help that you could easily spot where the the film falls apart in believability and thus makes it obvious that it was getting stretched out by the writer.
