Hannibal Trilogy -The Order?

I have recently watched the Silence of the Lambs and am about to watch Hannibal, but have discovered there is a third movie in the Trilogy called Red Dragon.

I am confused as to where Red Dragon fits in as i have seen conflicting things on the net. Can anyone shed some light please?

Red Dragon is basically a remake of manhunter, which is the first part of the Hannibal Trilogy, although it might not be for much longer, as they are making a 4th Hannibal movie where we get to see his childhood.

I'm not sure it matters too much, but Manhunter is a fine film (apart from the ending which I have a few problems with) - the only thing you could find off putting is that Hannibal is played by Brian Cox (who, IMHO, is far superior in the role to Anthony Hopkins).

Manhunter is the best of the 3. Lacks a "superstar" cast but is all the better for it. Dolarhyde is more believable too, I really found it hard to accept Fiennes as this character in Red Dragon. You should view the movies thus: Manhunter/Red Dragon - Silence of the lambs - Hannibal. They should make the next movie the last, it's getting a bit "Friday the 13th" now. Give them 10 years and we'll be seeing Lecter eating his fellow residents of his Old People's Home.

Manhunter was the first movie based on the novel "Red Dragon".
"Red Dragon" (the movie) is the second one based on the same novel..

The powers that be thought it was a good idea redoing it with the more known Anthony Hopkins version of Hannibal the Cannibal.
So the 2nd one is part of the trilogy and Manhunter isn't.

But Manhunter is a very good movie in its own right; I actually never really cared for The Silence of the Lambs and its oRABpring.

The order is;
Dino De Laurentiis gets rights to Red Dragon and makes MANHUNTER.

Does ok box office, nothing special pass on any sequal.

SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. does BIG/HUGE at box office. Dino very pissed off , misses out on big bucks. "Get me those rights back "

HANNIBAL gets Dino back on gravy train . "How can we make more money ?...... remake Manhunter "

RED DRAGON.

What next? make as much crap with Hannibal in it until it no longer makes money for Dino.

Manhunter is more fitting to the trilogy than Red Dragon. Manhunter stays true to the book whereas Red Dragon is almost completely rewritten! Eating the portrait, escaping a fire at the end and turning up at Graham's house, none of that is in the book! Mind you, the same could be said for Hannibal, I'm glad they changed the original ending. Hannibal and Clarice living happily ever after in Argentine together as man and wife? PURLEASE!!!!!!!

No argument from me here. But what is known as the "Hannibal Trilogy" does not include this movie.

Dr. Hannibal Lecktor, as he's known in Manhunter, is a side character anyway. Although Brian Cox portrayal of him is out of this world.

glad to see there's so much interest in this great series of films.

Manhunter was not called Red Dragon after the book as it was feared ppl might think it was a martial arts movie!! Now Lektor is so well-known it was thought not to be a problem with the remake.

The manhunter offering is a fine ,though often disturbing film!! Michael Mann (of Miami Vice and Heat) really stamped his style on it.

OK,it goes like this..
The first movie was called Manhunter,The second was Silence of the lambs and the third was Hannibal.Red Dragon is the remake of Manhunter.
N.B. Grissom from C.S.I. had the lead role in Manhunter.
Manhunter was excellent,as was Silence of the Lambs,Hannibal was a let down as was Red Dragon.

I've read Red Dragon quite a few times, and if you check again, you'll see that Frances Dolerhyde does actually try and eat the portrait, escapes the fire and does actually turn up at Will Graham's house to try and kill him.....it's all there, the ending is changed in the film Manhunter, not Red Dragon, so it's Manhunter that isn't true to the book.
