Hand Washing and Your Immune System?

I am wondering the truth...
The only time my fiance washes his hands is after going to the bathroom, and if he has stuff on them. Almost never washes his hands before eating claiming, "Makes my immune system stronger." (My cousin says the same thing too)

Where as I, have ALWAYS washed my hands before eating, I was the only one in my grade who did so through out school. And I also have the habit of never touching my eyes/nose/mouth/ears out in public, or until I've washed my hands. (I'm not obsessive, I only wash my hands as recommended)

In the past two years my fiance has gotten a cold three times, and I got mono (from him, he had a year before I did) And while he was sick one time I was around him the whole time, kissed him and everything, and never got it. Seems proof enough to me....But which is better for your immune system? Giving it a workout by not washing your hands? Or protecting it from viruses in the first place?
