Hand Fungus

Hi all, I just joined tonight in hopes that this board would be helpful to me in many ways. The main problem I`m experiencing right now is hand fungus. I have been to the doctor on Monday and got prescription cream, Nystatin. He wants me to apply it on 3 times a day. Unfortunately I didn`t go to the doctor soon enough so by this time, it has control of my thumb: < edited >

I can`t afford to take off from work (I work at a pet shop) while this is taking -forever- to heal. I haven`t seen any progress yet (though mom seems to think it`s spreading since Monday [and in a small way, I agree] and also seems to think that fungus taking at least a week to heal is unheard of). I`m wearing latex gloves (they do not have the powder) to protect the area from getting bacteria infection on top of this (otherwise, if I bandage it with gauze or whatnot, I have to deal with customers asking "What happened, a dog bite you?" all day and otherwise this hand would be unusable which with the work I do, I need both hands). Today when I removed the gloves when I got home, I found that the skin in the area was peeling. A "picker" that I am, I pulled off the peeling skin. Then clear fluid has been leaking out from a couple of the areas.

Are these a sign that the cream is working? What can I do to speed the healing process up? Any additional advice that you have in regards in handling this to get it to go away? How long can I expect before my hand will be normal? My hand feeling pain in that area when touched, is that normal? Is it normal for it to not be itchy before but is itchy since treatment started? Do I have to worry about passing this on to my own pets or the animals at the store (doctor said I won`t infect anyone, but is that really true?)? Besides being unsightly and obnoxious, does this have any other affects? I`m a 24 yr female (will be 25 in December), not pregnant (no kids and plan on keeping it that way). I`m the only one around here that has it.

Any help at all would be appreciated, just today, I felt like crying because this is plaguing me and refuses to go away or show any sign that it`s going away. I want my hand to heal and have everything go back to normal. I`m not liking this handicap one bit.

i don't think there is any fast way of healing this.
Although, why the latex glove, no air can get thru latex. You may want to try a cotton glove, especially when sleeping. Put the cream on thick and try the cotton glove for healing.

For work, i would wrap a layer of guaze over the cream hand. You will see progress, just going to take time. Don't worry so much if someone asks whats wrong with your hand. This needs time to heal.

Wish you well

Nystatin is a very good anitfungal. I didn't know it came in a cream. I always thought it was in pill form. From your post it appears the cream is not doing any good.
Baking soda is also a very good antifungal. (and cheap)Mix a tsp in a glass of water and soak your thumb in it. Do this several times a day.
You could also use your hair dryer and blow hot air on it for as long as you can stand it.

Ever think that you may be allergic to the latex gloves? I personally have found that if I use a lot of antibacterial soap on my hands(which really isn't good to use a lot of anyways) my skin gets dry and peels off, have also had a slight fungus infection which I was told was due to the fact I use to much antibacterial soap and the hand sanitizers, mainly because they have alcohol in them. They do make the hand sanitizers without alcohol. Since I have stopped using lots of antibacterial soaps and hand sanitizers, I have had less break outs. Hope this helps a bit. Good Luck!
