Hammer Films in HD

What a shame that the first commercially available Hammer film in HD is one of their worst.

Dracula AD 1972 is now available to download in HD from the Playstation Store

Like all other HD content its not available to buy at the moment but looking at the silly prices they ask for sd content I'm not sure how long the service will last unless they charge a more realistic price

I've got all the Dracula films that Hammer made on DVD.

I'm not really bothered about HD but you're right about Dracula AD.72. It's definately the weakest of all the Dracula movies that Hammer made.
I think the two best Dracula films they did was 'Dracula' from 1958 and Dracula Prince of Darkness from '65.
I still can't believe that the 1958 version isn't available on DVD in England. It's only available on region 1 from the USA.

The first Hammer Dracula film was released in the UK as part of a 3 film boxset with Curse of Frankenstein and The Mummy, although it is now deleted.

Although Dracula does not appear I also enjoy Brides Of Dracula from 1960.
Thats part of an 8 film R1 set available with several other Hammer classics that remain unreleased in the UK like Curse of the Werewolf and Kiss of the Vampire

Sony have another Hammer boxset lined up for R1 in the next few months to go with the Icons of Horror and Icons of Adventure sets they've already released.

morning captainmcoy and a happy new year.

The 8 Hammer movie box set you mentioned I bought from ebay a few years back and contains some of Hammers best films such as Curse Of The Werewolf and Brides of Dracula. Shame the box set is in Region 1, it should be more widely available.

I am not sure though if the films should be released in Blu-Ray because the original prints are still pretty good on DVD anyway and perhaps may not justify the extra cost of replacing them on Blu-Ray.

And yes, Horror of Dracula made in 1958 is a long time classic and will never be surpassed.

I was fortunate enough to ger Horror of Dracula (Dracula) for under a fiver from MVC just before they went bust.
Meliissa Stribling ( what a great name) is an added attraction.
AD 72 is not brilliant in comparison, but is entertaining in its own way, with the young actors struggling to be "groovy baby".
Johnny Alucard indeed.

It's a shame the rights to these films are spread over so many companies with some of those companies not really committed to getting the films out there, or providing a decent package of extras.

I think this would be brilliant. I can remember watching these years ago and loved watching every one of them ..... the horror ones, that is. It'd be excellent seeing them being displayed with such detail that they've never been seen in before.

I expect to the tied to the stake for this, but my personal favourite of the 'Dracula' series is the last entry, The Satanic Rites of. It utilises its contemporary setting in an infinitely more relevant and engaging way than the AD72 effort, cleverly conflating vampirism with big business, the production design and cinematography is pretty polished, and even Peter Cushing's intonations about the nature of the beast are effectively chilling. The film for me really does deliver on the promise of its evocative credit sequence, throughout which a foreboding shadow gradually looms up out the corner of the screen to eventually consume the frame. To see it in its OAR, in HD, and uncensored (ie minus the ridiculous 1-second breast-staking cut) would be wonderful.

When it comes to the women I think Veronica Carlson who was in 'Dracula has risen from the grave' has got to be the best looking.

Another one of my favourite Dracula films which often gets forgotten is Scars Of Dracula with Dennis Waterman and Jenny Hanley.

I think 'Scars..' is the only Dracula film when you actually see him climbing up the castle walls.

Not HD but the original region free Anchor Bay dvd plays the film in widescreen uncut.

Its the only official release for the film.

It appears to have fallen into the US Public Domain so there are lots of bootleg releases of the film often with other movies but I cant vouch for the quality.

The Anchor Bay disc has another World of Hammer episode + the UK and US trailers

Only on R2.

For US dvd's we are pretty well near complete.

Anchor Bay released all the ones owned by Studio Canal , some with commentaries - Optimum have done most on R2 but not with all the extras.

Universal are very poor in the UK having licenced 2 films only but those 2 + 6 others are on a R1 boxset from Universal.

Columbia via Sony have released 2 boxsets of 4 films each and another with 5 movies is on the way soon.

Sony have released a few of these but at
