Halo reach: How do i unlock more armor?

I have a bunch of stuff unlocked to where i can buy it with credits, but other people have helmets and things i have never even seen in the armory. Do these show up later when i rank up online higher?? I am trying to get better shoulder armor but the ones i saw that i liked i dont have yet and dont know what they are...
