Halo games and xbox live help?

i will be getting a xbox 360 very soon. I have a wireless network and i cant afford the wireless adaptor, so my only option is the ethernet cable although my modem is upstairs and the tv is downstairs is there a way i can move the modem also what game should i get halo 3 or ODST remember i wont have xbox live for a while
