Halloween remake

I see Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween was released in the UK late September. I have to admit I completely missed this and thought they would have delayed releasing it until today(like has been a trend in the past). Anyway, I got a chance to see it tonight and would like any opinions from those who have seen it. I know it will not be as good as the original, but is it a decent film? I've seen a couple of Rob Zombie's films (Devil Rejects and HOTC) and alongside the first two Saw films are the only recent horror films that have entertained me. Has Zombie done Halloween justice?

Halloween (2007) Summary:

0-60 Minutes = Good, adRAB to the story, interesting, Malcolm McDowell is really good as Dr Loomis.
60-120 Minutes = Utter crap, totally pointless re-telling of the highly superior original but this time with crappy acting, a higher focus on pointless gore and an extremely poor ending.

I gave it 4/10. It's better than the terrible Halloween Resurrection, but that's really not saying much.

My advice is to save your money and just stay in and watch the original, it's on tonight at 11:30pm on BBC1.

Rob Zombie does take more time out to explain how Michael Myers' character ended up as he did and how Laurie Strode was the sister who was "given" to a family that could look after her.......................Like everyone said about the ending it kinda didn't have an ending IMHO! Loved Malcolm McDowell as Doctor Loomis though.

the problem is horror films these days don't have the impact they did. Having watched the original Halloween last night there is only a simple answer. Zombie's version just isn't as good.

I don't want to or need to know Michael's background, why he is like he is. All I need to know is that he is inherently evil. It makes him more menacing.

its weird but halloween is one of my favourite films i know it back to front BUT...i kind of liked the remake.

good points:
1. michael's mother - i genuinely felt sorry for her and i thought the majority of the first section was quite well acted
2. RZ made it a different film, not supernatural and i quite liked this angle too
3. it was really brutal and not jokey like a lot of horror films these days. the scene when he stabbed his sister was horrific as was his attack on annie
4. the bit with laurie's parents absolutely shocked me
5. he kept some scenes the same but then played around with them - ie 'was it the boogeyman?' which (if you know the original) leaRAB you to believe the film is over and then...BAM
6. malcolm mcdowell was excellent i thought
7. annie lives! i quite liked the way her surviving was random
8. the ending - not left open for a sequel which i liked (though im sure they will make one)

bad points:
1. you spent zero time with the 3 girls before he started attacking them so you didnt care what happened to them
2. there were too many deaths i though, especially in the escape from the sanitorium

Yeah, I get that too. But sometimes I like to know why someone started killing, just not on a spur of the moment thing, a bit of character development for me is sometimes good but I guess in Freddy, Michael Myers, Jason Vorhees' and Leatherfaces' cases we just know they are evil and that is all that matters.

PJ68 makes some good points about Michael's mother, she was a good person and I did like Sheri Moon Zombie in House of 1000 corpses/The Devil's rejects. Although people said it was a remake I think Zombie just didn't want to make a straightforward remake, he wanted to add his own touches to it and it said that Carpenter was happy to give his approval for this (as Carpenter has also given his approval for a remake of Escape from New York starting Gerard Butler, but I won't add to that as its a horror thread).

I suppose it depenRAB on how well it did whether or not there will be a sequel and if Zombie will make this or not.

I agree, sometimes its nice to know 'why', but it does make the audience more sympathetic with the killer. I refuse to watch Hannibal Rising for that reason. Hannibal is a chilling character because it seems he is just evil. But when you start learning about his past, what happened to his sister and that you begin to sympathise.

Hi Listentome. Yeah, I haven't seen Hannibal Rising either, I didn't like the look of it to be honest.

I don't think I was in any way sympathetic to Michael Myers' character either, he had a good number of years to rehabilitate, he was just so evil that he could not do this. I also wondered why it took him so long to escape and re-offend. We can only assume this burning hatred and evil was burning up inside him and just needed a release.
