Hairdressers HELP! - I want blonde hair?

I have natural light brown hair but have had it red for a couple of years. I have decided to go blonde. My hair is in good condition and I did hair dressing for a while (although never trained). I thought I would bleach my hair in order to get as much of the red out as possible. I know I can't leave the bleach on too long as it will damage the hair. The hair will probably be quite a warm bright colour after bleaching and so I have a light ash brown ready which should cancel out the warm tones. I then thought I would wait a few weeks and then have highlights put back in. What do you think about this? Will I manage to get my hair blonde this way or can you suggest another way - I really want blonde hair and am very determined. Any help on how to achieve this without going to the hairdresser would be great! Thanks x
 
Experience has learnt me that shades of hairdye do NOT cancel each other out!! The hairdye remains in the hair and if you put more on the top, it's still there! What colour it turns is yet another story. It can be done but be careful. I am currently growing out a full head of jet black!!
