If you haven't already, you should check out the anime, which I think is even better. It's one of the rare occasions where they improve on the manga by actually ADAPTING it, rather than just remaking the manga shot-for-shot. There's very little actual "filler" in the sense of totally non-canon material, but they expand on a lot of stuff that the manga only touches on fairly briefly.

Hey, this thread neglected Full Metal Panic, which has a paranoid teenage soldier playing bodyguard to a high school girl that vacillates between liking him and wanting to smite him with holy rage for his well-meaning transgressions. Watch it and love it.

There's enough to go on that they also made a short series (Fumoffu) that did nothing but comedy, so there you go.
