Guy who has a little shorter than medium hair. How do you slick it.?

I want to slick my hair back, Im a guy. My hair is kinda in between short and medium and I want to slick it. I have tried to slick it but it just spikes up a ugly and wont stay down. How do I make it stay down. Medium Hair.PLZ HELP
