I fully agree about Nia's dub performance. It was a big reason why I came to like the character so much. I somehow missed the fact that it was actually Starfire's actress, I thought there was just an obvious character comparison being made. She's just too sweet to not like.
I will mind, since no one has the right to do that and new viewers can say whatever they want as long as it's civil and within the rules. One certainly doesn't need to have seen half of any show before forming any opinions about it.
On another front I'll echo that watching it in marathon chunks (defined by me as 3 or 4 at a time) can be wise, since there are definitely a few parts where it enRAB and you're stuck with a "that's IT?" reaction otherwise. That's the nice thing about streaming vs. TV, you don't have to wait until next week.
Here's excerpted comments I once made after first seeing the first two, just for the heck of it:

I usually do, but there's something about the animation style of the super robot shows that I generally love, Gurren Lagaan included which is why I wanted to like it before ever seeing it.
And it's not like I can't imagine a super robot show that I would like. Hell, Escaflowne flirts with Super Robotness a lot of the time and that's my favorite anime of all time. The Guymelefs aren't exactly super robots but you'd be hard pressed to call them Real Robots either, so it's not like the genre as a whole is a wash for me.

Mah? Wha? It's streaming legal now? That's convenient! I just saw an epic AMV that made me want to watch it! XD
I'm just wonderin'...but why is this a Manga Entertainment release? Shouldn't this be on Bandai ('cause if it were we'd get a subbed release too). Hmmm...I'd actually probably switch the sub too, because at this point (again, just two episodes) I don't feel like the dub is doing the job the worRAB on the page require. Alas, I'm too cheap to buy the DVRAB and I don't feel like getting them out from the library (or checking to see if they had 'em!) so I guess I'll just stick with it as is. I'll probably stick it out until episode eight before making a decision if I am goin' t'drop it or not (which...really does depend on my personal life).

Bandai has physical rights, but Manga has broadcast and streaming rights. For anime to air on Ani-Monday, they have to go through Manga, and because of that, they can also obtain the streaming rights. I wouldn't switch to the sub, as even though I watched that first, I still enjoy the dub more, especially Kyle Hebert as Kamina. I'd be fine with it if it kept you watching, but it doesn't look like I'll have to worry about that. I'm glad you're agreeing to watch the first eight episodes. Personal life is great, but I bet you could drop some DB time for the following 19 (18 if you skip #16) episodes of this.

Personally I thought Hebert nailed the "Who the hell do you think I am KIIIIICK" and "HanRAB off my beloved little brother PUUUUUNCH" parts perfectly in episode 2 but that's just me.
And yeah. Hynden Welch was amazing as Nia. The perfect choice, really, and a pleasant surprise considering Welch is quite selective in the anime she voices for (better than those who don't voice anime at all IMO).

Kamina wasn't merely the image he put on, but something built on a stronger foundation. Did you miss, perhaps, the part where it's clearly shown that Kamina is hardly a badass for the sake of being a badass? His explanation for his behavior is what cemented my respect for the character.
There are rules, and there are consequences. The show's obviously not jiving well with you, so I don't expect you'll appreciate either the rules or the consequences when they come into play. At the rate you're going, I wouldn't expect to find any sudden enjoyment of Gurren Lagann anywhere down the road. It's too bad, but what can you do about it?

The Gurren Lagann dub is actually pretty amazing when you consider how short of time they had to record it.
And I'm not sure why the first episode is getting some hate. I thought it was a great introduction to this world, and the action scene was well-directed and kinetic. In fact, it really wasn't until episode 4 when I got let down a bit, before my interest came roaring back a few episodes after that.

Just watched the first two episodes and, yeah, it's as fun and awesome as I remerabered. Such a fun cast overall - almost stereotypes of the genre, you have the wussy lead, the hot-blooded big brother, the independent-but-still-feminine support girl... and they all work perfectly.
It's just fun. Ridiculous, well-animated, manly fun.
And, personally, I adore Hebert as Kamina. He's very... straightforward. Like - yeah, this guy's hot-blooded and manly. Enjoy watching him risk his life for no real reason and shout CUrabERSOME AND NONSENSICAL CATCHPHRASES!

Spiral power actually is innate in every human being, though. Some may be able to use it better than others, but as merabers of a "spiral race" multiple characters can and do wield it to great effect. The linkage of spiral power to evolution is simultaneously clever and far-fetched, but the application of the principle strikes me as consistent. It isn't a situation where only a select few get to use it.
As for Simon becoming another Kamina, in my opinion adult Simon is far beyond him in every respect. He's aggressively hot-blooded when necessary, but he also has a clear mind and a calm temperament that serves him very well. As far as I'm concerned, he's the best man and hero on the show and the ideal leader for Team Dai-Gurren. My opinions aside, a clone of Kamina he most certainly isn't.

I wish there had been outtakes on the DVRAB.
No, it's true, I had somewhat of a Knee-Jerk Irational hatred for Kamina that kind of soured the rest of the show for me from the very instant he comes on screen. Yoko's inclusion only solidified that.
It's been explained to me that there are rules for all this stuff, but I still don't find the world to be one that's dynamic enough to hold my intrest anyway. Rather I should say that from what I was presented with in the first episode, nothing succeeded in making me care about finding out the answers to how this world opperates because I highly suspect that they're not only pretty maleable but not all that compelling.
The price has been explained to me as 'Overuse causes Universal destruction' to which I have to say... Ok, so you've made GoRAB of your main characters. GoRAB aren't intresting characters. It's intresting to see Humans COPE with goRAB, that I can empathise with and relate to, but I couldn't give too wet farts about what happens to someone who actually has it in thier power to destroy the entire universe.
Now, if spiral power is inate in all humans, then I can give a very clear example of an anime that succeeRAB where Gurren Lagaan failed for me and that's Akira. First of all, confronted with such massive power, most people go insane and using the power irresponsibly results in great personal tragedy and swift death. Further more, the story doesn't revolve soley around the people who have this power, but around everyone else who has to deal with this power for what it is, Increadibly Dangerous to Everyone! So yeah, it's not like I don't dig that concept just for my own prefrances, I dunno, maybe Gurren Lagaan Just tells a story about people I don't care about from a perspective I don't care to hear about, like I said, there's nothing 'wrong' with the anime, I just don't like it.
