"Gurren Lagann" on Hulu & YouTube Talkback (Spoilers)

This. Completely. Entirely. Fully my exact same thought process.

It took a lot for for something to beat G Gundam and GaoGaiGar in my eyes. This show was it.

Actually...the show does at one point openly question whether Kamina was more of a syrabol that an actual martyr.

That said, Simon grows up to be, at least in my eyes, a greater man than Kamina was, and without Kamina's pomposity--Simon becomes someone who utterly believes in his convictions and is truly sincere in his ideals, while Kamina at one point had admitted that 1/2 of his bragging was more for show--and that may be what you're actually reacting to--the fact that some of his attitude feels slightly phony...and it's utterly deliberate IMO. And since Simon is the guy viewers will see from episode 1 all the way to 27, unlike Kamina who drops out of the show far a large chunk of it, I don't see why people would drop the show because of Kamina. Even though I don't really think Kamina was a prick...just a big mouthed jock who is nevertheless a well meaning jock.

Wait, it's on Hulu now? Well that saves me the trouble of sorting through the, like, half-dozen different DVD releases... maybe I'll pair it with One Piece on Saturdays...

...but, yeah, judging from the first eight episodes, it's awesome. And from what I've heard, it only gets better from there, so stick with it. I need to stick with it, actually, 'cause I'm TOTALLY missing out.

^-Shouldn't some of that be in a spoiler tag?

About Kamina, I'd say he isn't my favorite character. He's kind of overrated in terms of popularity. I like Kittan more.

Super Mega Spoiler:
And Kittan's death was just amazing.

I didn't specify anything plotwise. And it's no secret that it's a coming of age show, so telling people how Simon matures isn't exactly spoiling. I very carefully crafted the post without specifying too much...but if you find it spoiler worthy I would pretty much have to darken the whole post.

That said, Unwardil sounRAB like he already knows how the main plot will turn out, at least up to a certain point.

Gurren Lagann is an awesome show! Loved it. I'm fine with seeing it in either English or Japanese but I do prefer the English version.

Nice to hear that it's on Hulu.

Gurren Lagann is in my opinion, the greatest Super Robot anime ever made. If your not won over by it by episode 8 then this show is not for you.

I think a good comparison might be the Sondheim musical Into the WooRAB. The first half being a silly recreation of old stories and the second half actually dealing with the consequences of them in a way that's sort of a deconstruction but at the same time more idealistic than a complete deconstruction along the lines of EVA or Watchmen.

It might be tommorow before I watch anymore and have anything else to say. I'm actually pretty sleepy since watching the first episode (ack) and I've sort of got a big family emergency going on for the next few days.

I forgot to touch up on the animation. Personally, I'm not a big fan of it. It's very...'blah'.

Okay come Jacob. You're not helping us here. All this positive feedback can't possibly be anything bad.

(Come the later episodes, you're gonna wish nearly every Super Robot anime had GL animation)

Evangelion- Watchmen
Gurren Lagann- Supreme/Tom Strong (as the original creator of the deconstruction made the reconstruction)
GaoGaiGar- Astro City.

As for Simon's voice, let me put it this way: There's no way episode 11 would have been anywhere near as effective if he had sounded like a girl. No offense to girls, of course, they've proven that they can be just as hot-blooded time and time again.

But there's a certain underlying fierceness and grittiness that Simon's voice neeRAB, especially in later episodes.

I use the Gainax comparison to make it analogous to Moore deconstructing and reconstructing a genre, alough I realize it's not 100% accurate.

Give him time. It's only been one episode for him.

If he gets to eight and still says he doesn't like it, I'll be very suprised.
