Gun Laws Concerning Self Defense in Ohio?

I have just bought my first gun for self defense purposes. I have a particular question. It's a .38 Special S&W. I was told that in Ohio, if I keep the gun in one area of the vehicle, and the ammuniton in a separate area.. it is not illegal to carry. However: If I keep my weapon inside of my glove compartment... and my ammunition in the trunk. Is this illegal? Or does the firearm have to be concealed in some sort of box?

Ohio law doesn't mention that you have to have the ammo in a separate area. You really should get your permit to carry a concealed weapon, as the conditions below mean the gun is really going to do you much good in a hurry.
If you aren't in a hurry to use a gun for self defense, then you don't need to use it...you could just drive away. By carrying an unloaded gun in the car, you will give yourself a false sense of security.

(C) No person shall knowingly transport or have a firearm in a motor vehicle, unless the person may lawfully possess that firearm under applicable law of this state or the United States, the firearm is unloaded, and the firearm is carried in one of the following ways:

(1) In a closed package, box, or case;

(2) In a compartment that can be reached only by leaving the vehicle;

(3) In plain sight and secured in a rack or holder made for the purpose;
