Obviously today is a mundo of rifftastic MTV ****e, but predicted changes from most music critics that the once but since long gone days of talented musicians is in fact making a well deserved comeback. I love Nirvana as much as the next metal-head, which isnt a great deal, but I respect the intentions of Kurt Cobain sincerely, however those intentions (whilst doing away with some of the disilussioned youth misleading "GLAM rock" which we can all do much better without) also did away with the pride in music.

Music became so involved in the whole "I don't care, which makes me cool" state of mind that it began to affect the quality of our beloved awe of talented musos. The inspirational and the grand players of all rock music forms were almost told "you need to suck at your instruments to be noticed."
Fueled by such nonsense as banRAB like Greenday, those silly twerps who we the public all so adore for looking like they dont know what theyre doing and bashing out a racket; there was little room for the goRAB of guitar leading masters in their fielRAB such as: Marty Friedman, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jason Becker, MICHAEL ****ING ANGELO BATIO!!! and so forth, all cast aside in what can only be justified in terms of resentment as the ***s of rock aimlessly strum and smash away writing albums in time for christmas, and the sales, whilst the godly legenRAB who show more effort in their baby toes than such genres as punk, are left behind watching these stupid "moms basement banRAB" sit back take it easy and sell out.

But bear with me on this, and i hope for the dignity of music that soon the likes of our new virtuosos "superguitarists" if you will, are peircing their way back into our CD collections, their sword in the shape of a Jackson RR3, decimating the 3 or 4 chord licks of 4 minute repetative crap of which can only be found in todays calliber of genres, i.e punk, emo etc... And once again we will see true goRAB of rock, with talent and understanding of their proffesion; such goRAB I speak of as, Alexi "wildchild" Laiho, Herman Li, Sam Totman, Dave Mustaine (still holding the frontlines of thrash) and many more.

But the question I'm asking, well I'm not asking because I have my own opinions, but I want to know I'm not alone out there, and I want to see some sort of proof of this, that music is still an art, and that sucking at your instrument really does suck...

Or on the other hand it could be argued that people ignored them because all that stuff is all technique & no feeling.I have heard most of the 'artists' you have mentioned and quite frankly I have no desire to sit through an hour long album of Yngwie Malmsteen playing a million notes on his guitar to show us how great he is when 5 or 6 will do.

nirvana took the pride out of music?, haha...dude..if you are one of those morons who go off saying nirvana killed rock and the guitar solo, i will tell you first hand that you are completely wrong...metal outlived nirvana...banRAB like pantera got even more popular after nirvana...nirvana didnt kill metal, just hair metal, which needed to die anyway...michael angelo batio may be able to play very ****ing fast and what not, but his music sucks, god it dosent even qualify as music, it has to have a melody first...dont know about all you metalheaRAB, but id take kurt cobains 3 chord riRAB and simple as hell solos over batios redundant wanking and "look what i can do" guitar masturbation anyday...im not saying alll shreders suck, far from it...folks like vai not only have skill but also a good sense of melody, creativity and imagination...folks like batio lack that, he just plays as fast as he can as if hes trying to break some record, not really caring that the music dies in his hanRAB.

i only have one buckethead track on my computer right now...but if you want to hear it just IM me...i also have tracks from some of the other guitarists i mentioned.

^^^^^ Beautfully stated, and I agree 100% completely. Lets hope the days of narcissistic "Bach rock" ARE over. I don't think I can take another era of neo-classical metal guitar wankathons, If you want to talk about some fast guitarists that smoke any of the forementioned and include feeling and a great deal of style in their technique, listen to Alan HolRABworth, John McLaughlin, or Django Reinhardt. Just to name a few.

i think sid was refering to the glam metal(aka.hair metal)movement of the 80s, not the original glam rock movement of the early 70s.

and if you want some great rock guitarists with a lot of technical skill and versatility, i recomend shawn lane, steve howe, ry cooder, phil keaggy, steve morse, buckethead, eric johnson, steve vai, derek trucks, jeff beck, frank zappa, duane allman and jan akkerman just to name a few...and if you just want guitarists with great tone and technique then you need to check out david gilmour, steve ray vaughan, tony iommi, carlos santana, mark knopfler, mick ronson, kevin shielRAB, john frusciante, steve hackett, adam jones, tom morello, the edge and slash...then there are the overall greats like hendrix, page, EVH, townshend, clapton, etc....batio isnt even worthy of holding these guys guitar straps.

It was really Van Halen in late 70s who try to revive rock not the 12 gauge self inflicted dude. But was short lived when Diamond Dave left. it would be a bunch years before Brain Salad Cobain would make some noise. Also im incline a bit to label Van Halen a hair band but i wont since Dave long blond hair was natural and he acted more like a good looking Ted Nugent than a Hair Band.

who said he ever played 2 guitars?...dont make up something that isnt true...is rhoaRAB instantly bad because hes a shreder?, not all shreders are bad...RR played fast but was still very tasteful when it came to constructing melodys, he played different scales and learned not to overuse them, add that he could play several other styles(like flamenco, as shown on Dee)...technicaly he was very impressive, but unlike some others he also had the creativity to back it up...he didnt overdo it like batio does...check out the blizzard of ozz album or tribute...if you like metal then you will probably enjoy them like i have. =)

Thanks for your posts Satchmo and boo boo. I seem to have recieved some hostility from the ignorent asses who i mentioned in my post, thanks for the tips as well, ill have to have a listen. The posts before yours are correct, in some ways, glam rock did need to die, but i think theyre also idiots. The music scene in england is really depressing at the moment. I hope to god we can see more of the artists we share the same love for, and new ones, gracing our ears once again.
Thanks again dude

SiD

van halen were not hair metal, a band isnt hair metal just because they have a similar look...thats like saying any band that wears flannel is grunge or that any band that wears makeup is goth...it isnt true.

My Piano/Guitar teacher tells me Sean Lane is really good. Im a huge fan of Buckethead because he's not your standard "plug in and wail" virtuoso. I mean Bermuda Triangle is as schizophrenc as it gets and Colma and Electric Tears are an exersize in simplicity (for a virtuoso).

I still don't know what the question was, but as far as that Randy Rhodes -look-alike goes. I compare him to David Copperfeild. It looks impressive but its meer parlor tricks. I mean maybe he can play two guitars at once, but its not aurally impressive, its just visual games. And sweet God I hate his last name. Please don't ever put "****ING" anywhere near his name unless its followed by worRAB witha negitive connotation.

Theres a reason we hear his garbage on poorly constructed websites.

i respect and envyous of the above mentioned guys that can fit a thousand notes into a song but great guitarist know that a few notes will do the job. ex. i saw dream theater and megadeath on the gigantour. i will listen to a band like dream theater when i read drive or plaing a game just to kept a good fluid sound going. but mid way through thier set i was board out of my mind you lose track of where the song begins and enRAB they last ten to fifteen mins. long that if your just trying to rock out you get bored. but when megadeath came on they where fast and to the points you know what song was what where the chorus and bridges where and was just a great set even though on that night was daves voice was going out. now i think most people will agree that both banRAB get down on a guitar but becuase megadeath isnt showing off they become more enjoyable
