Guilty Pleasure Cartoons

Ohhh, Bratz. I think I could intelligently state why I like that show, but I'd still feel guilty about watching it. I remember when I first joined this site, I was so defensive about liking it that I even defended the (awful, immoral, ugly) doll line.

Oh, and also, I just realized something. If we're defining guilty pleasures as liking a show not targeted at you; well, very few foreign directors make films with the idea that people from other countries will enjoy them. :p

Is Sailor Moon really a "girl" show? There's enough action to satisfy any male viewer. My Little Pony, now THAT'S a girl show.

It's a sad truth; even having a female protaganist is enough to classify a production as being "for girls", for some people anyway.

You know, except if it's a hardcore chick like Lara Croft.:p

That's exactly how I felt about Winx Club. It was the first "girly" piece of media I ever really got that much into. And that's another reason I no longer look at it as a guilty pleasure now - Sex and the City has no action (though Magical DoReMi may be a better example, since I'm way above the target age for that too, however, DoReMi always seemed a lot less "girly" than most of the others so it really didn't stop me from viewing Winx as a guilty pleasure).

Yeah I know, add to that, depending on the ages of the characters, shows with female protagonist equals hot women, what male doesn't love fan service.

One of my favorite things about shows for boys are the female characters, to provide some eye candy. Not taking comedy shows into consideration (you make me laugh, that is good enough for me), but given a choice of watching an action show with just male characters or just female characters, I choice the show with the the all female characters.

I agree with you MLP is where I draw the line. I hear the original shows had some great action, dark story lines, but I just can't get into that show, that is too much for me. It is a show about a bunch of ponies, at least the Care Bears had great villains to satisfy me.

I tend not to think about cartoons like that anymore, especially ones aimed at younger audiences. It's kinda disgusting if you think about it.

I've never seen Charlie's Angels or Xena, but in cartoons it tends to be a bit more obvious - fanservice anime has exaggerated sound effects and more attention drawn to it. (However, Sex and the City is even more blatant than any anime I've ever seen, and all you need to know is the title to know why.)

However, I agree with your last sentence *cough*Eiken*cough*. I am just saying that it's no big deal to me when it's animated.

As for Sailor Moon, I was aware of that, but it is still a kids show in Japan, just not aimed at that young of a demographic (I already knew about "Lita's" "talent"). Winx Club still shares the same demographic in Italy as it does in the US, and that kind of content is not present on either version of the show.

Here are mine, but I got a pretty big list.

Total Drama Island/TDA- Okay I know alot of people criticize this show for it being a modern cartoon but its actually funny. Although this is a flash animated show I like it. But however I don't watch the edits that CN made, I prefer the Canada version. I haven't seen TDA yet but I really want to.

Winx Club- As mentioned above this is a "girly" show, but however it does have a good concept along with the writing. Plus good character designs. Along with the music.

Sonic Satam- This used to be a guilty cartoon but I then felt better because people on here{Some} like this show. I actually love this show because its better than that crappy Sonic X{Which in my opinion is the WORST CARTOON FOR SONIC EVER}. Sonic satam has good writing, animation, and a badass robotnik. Which Sonic X lacks{plus my older brother gives Sonic X a bad rating because he thinks its Roger Rabbit on the cracks. You know with Sonic being around humans.}

Secret Of Nimh- Okay so the movie wasn't that well done to the book but however its a great animated film. Although I dislike Bluth for some reasons this movie is far the best animated film that was made during the 80's. Plus this is considered as Bluth's masterpiece.

Bakshi- One of the best directors for animation. His early work is his best while the rest is just about as good but not as great. I liked Fritz and Traffic for music, but Coonskin. Coonskin is in my point of view is Bakshi's masterpiece. Wizards was alright, Fire and Ice I haven't seen, Cool World is better than Roger{Although I like Roger Rabbit as well}. Spicy City deserves a DVD release, and I enjoyed mighty mouse he did with John K. Oh and I loved Hey good lookin.

Here are some cartoons that I consider to be guilty pleasures.

Wish Kid - A lot of people don't like this show, but I actually enjoy it.

Wedding Peach - A lot of people probably view this show as a Sailor Moon rip-off that sucks, but I think that it's great. Not to mention that I think that Wedding Peach does some things better than Sailor Moon, like being a better heroine.

Digimon - Even though this show has a bad English dub, I still think it's great.

Before I start, when on earth did Sailor Moon became a guilty pleasure? If you guys are referring to the English dub, then yes, I'll agree, but the original Japanese show? I thought it was mainstream show that lots of people enjoyed. And before you pull the "boys watched it too" thing, so? There's a few males I know that openly admitted that they love the show.

Anyways, to contribute something original to this thread, here's one I bet almost all of you won't agree with: SOME of the Daffy/Speedy cartoons. Now grated, yes, I agree that a lot of them were bad (anything Alex Lovy did was pretty bad), but, if you actually look into some of them with a open mind (not judging Daffy because he's a jerk for instance), there's actually a couple that are not that horrible. True, the characters had better days, but if you just sit back and watch some of them with the thought of being amused, you might be surprised.

In fact, here's a couple I recommend giving a peek if the opportunity ever arises...

It's Nice To Have A Mouse Around The House
Daffy Rents
A Squeak In The Deep
Feather Finger
Swing Ding Amigo
A Taste Of Catnip
Quacker Tracker

That cartoon based on the Wayside School books. They were almost nothing like the books that I used to read as a kid, but it still gave me enough of a nostalgia feeling to get me to watch.

Totally Spies--I never considered this a 'good' show, but I'd watch it anyway. Just to see them try.
Road Rovers--Ditto.
Kim Possible--This one was actually a good show. A great show! I just know I'm not its target demographic...
Total Drama Island--The first 'reality show' I ever watched. Ever considered watching. And--God help me--I thought it was hilarious!
Secret of NIMH--I enjoy a lot of animated movies. But Disney movies are mainstream enough that it feels normal liking them. Secret of NIMH is...well, obscure enough to make me feel a little self-conscious about it.

...Care Bears. Heh. I guess its reasuring to hear people still talk about liking them. I have fond memories of the movies. Vauge memories, but fond ones...

-Digimon Frontier. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit I enjoyed some of it, even though the continuous "epic fails" which plagued the series' last few episodes were very annoying, and it wasn't even fun like 02's BlackWarGreymon arc. That, and the general reversion to the more childish concepts of Adventure.
-I'm likewise embarassed to admit I enjoyed Powerpuff Girls, even going to the movie, when I was younger.
- And from what I've heard, the Donkey Kong Country cartoon was not well liked - but I personally enjoyed it.

Oh dear...after I type all of this, I'm going facepalm in embarrassment.

Hamtaro - I had to admit, that show was pretty funny. I watched it everyday. I even recorded some episodes. I just wish it stayed longer...

Strawberry Shortcake 2003 - More for the character designs than the actual show mind you. Strawberry's design was actually cute, and I actually liked Ginger Snap... Then they did another reboot a few years later and I bailed out.

Baby Looney Tunes - Well, the first season anyway. I didn't watch the later ones, nor do I even want to.

Atomic Betty - I must be one of the few who liked the show for what it was. I heard the later seasons were better, though.

And the winner for biggest guilty pleasure cartoon is...

Captain Flamingo. There, I said it. Captain Flamingo. I even recorded most of the episodes. I'll admit this show was goofy and stupid when I first looked at it, but I gave it a chance.

Woah, woah, woah. Drawn Together actually had some of the best traditional animation on television in that period of time. Especially considering it was on cable, Almost all of its animators were straight off Futurama. The music was also pretty good, and its characters (while complete moronic jerks) became pretty likeable the more the series went on. And it was absolutely hilarious, I don't think it was solely created to compete with Family Guy or use shock humor, that's just the creators sense of humor, you can tell by listening to them in interviews or commentary.
