Guidance on Web Design?

I have decided to start self teaching myself how to web design, however the only thing that is clear to me is that there two things to the web: web development and web design. Also I am confused as to what is a considered a good base out of this list:

HTML
XHTML
CSS
Javascript
AJAX
PHP
MySQL
Flash
Drupal
Coldfusion
ASP.NET
jQuery

Finally how does the Adobe Creative Suite fit in with all of this and which of the programs included are going to be the most important. As hope you can appreciate this field is quite daunting at first and some expert help would be of great use.

Hi you can try W3schools for web designing tips and have you decided in what way you are going to try because some will do by templates and some will do by using software languages and see i got my web site designed by the experts of XnYnZ and i you wish you can follow the tips from smartwebby and get benefited..
