Guardian: animated movies are failing their audience

I'm torn here. On one hand, the writer's really not giving children enough credit.

On the other hand, I do feel that there is more of a concentrated effort than ever before to lure adults to animated features. Who's to say if it'd be a great decision from a business standpoint, but I'd like to see an (American) animated film that makes no bones about it being for kids.

He actually means that Movies nowadays are made more for the adult audience and forget about kids and mostly the content is to please adults and they forget to please kids.

And yes some kids can sit through 2 hrs, but most of the kids can't. they get tired.. heck, even adults sometimes get tired when a Movie is too long.

He's saying like for example Toy story was something for everyone could enjoy because it was neutral in it's content, or examples are Lion king or Finding Nemo. but I agree with what he saids, the Increible and other movies include too much nods and gags to our times or earlier times, and they forget that most kids have no idea about the styles of other decades.

Hes not saying cartoons should be for kids only, he's saying he wants cartoons to be aimed for everyone, something kids and adults can enjoy, and not only the adults.

I actually agree with the article.

There are. It's just that the market is making it increasingly difficult to obtain distribution and funding outside of home DVD and television. A theatrical run, however meager, can add prestige for the eventual DVD release but as it gets harder and more expensive for families to get to the movies, there has to be a draw for the adults- whether it's celebrity voices or more sophisticated stories and characters.

And as for the running time issue, the book keepers are going to be happier if the movie can squeeze in an extra showing per day. But in the post-LOTR world, film makers have gotten better about stating their case for longer running times. And multiplexes help as well. You might get 4 to 5 showings a day with a movie running 2 hours or more, but if you've got 3 screens playing the movie... the extra length doesn't matter as much because now the movie can run close to 20 times a day in that one multiplex.
