groin hernia repair

I am glad too! It sounds like the mesh CAN work great, but has its risks. I hope my surgery goes well like yours, EducatedPanther! Now I'm just hoping that the cost isn't too bad. I am getting married this December, so wedding costs are already quite a bit. I was reading about the cost for a groin hernia repair (the surgeon is going to get back to me after they talk to insurance) and some people paid up to $25,000! However, this was without health insurance. I am glad that mine has a cap at what I'd have to pay out of pocket per year, but that would be great if it wasn't that much over the deductible in the end.

I think the "average" is around $18k. I paid $4k for mine, without going through my health insurance. You will want to find out what the insurance company will pay before-hand, so you know what to expect to pay. Sounds like yours are in the fairly early stage so yours may be a bit cheaper.

I hope it isn't too bad in cost! The scheduling lady I talked to (who will be talking to my insurance) just kept telling me what my deductible was, but I VERY WELL think it will be more than just that! I did check with my insurance and I have a max out of pocket of $2,500 per year, plus the $400 deductible, so I guess it'll be around $3K tops! Way better than $18K for sure.

How would you say your recovery was? Like on the first day, did you feel pretty awful and in a lot of pain, or not too bad? I know I'll have painkillers, but I don't know how difficult it will be to walk and use the restroom, things like that. I'll have my fiance there with me the first day, and the doctor said I would be okay on my own after that... but I am curious to know if this is usually the case or if it's usually very tough for more than just a day.

When I look at photos of hernias, mine looks very less noticeable than most of them. I am hoping it's a very simple and small hernia. I am thinking it's two indirect inguinal hernias due to its location. They seem a bit lower than direct inguinal and they aren't as much to the side as femoral.

Good Luck on your upcoming surgery. I will give you some of my personal information on my hernia surgery that I had 9 months ago. It was laporascopic. I paid almost $5,000. I did NOT go through my insurance and had the surgery in a surgical center NOT in a hospital. My insurance company reimbursed me 50%. I was in pain for the first week. I tried very hard NOT to sneeze, cough, or go to the bathroom. Believe it or not I did not sneeze for almost 1 month!!! You must get up and walk around every few hours. DONT just lay in bed. I ate very light in order to prevent going to the bathroom. Urinating was no problem at all. My pain went away after a few (3) weeks. I went back to the gym and started lifting light weights after 1 month. I was doing fine until about 3 months ago when I started having pain again. I am now going to have the surgical screw removed from my groin hopefully this week or next week. My surgeon told me that he used a large piece of mesh, 2metallic tacks, and a titanium screw. He believes the pain is coming from the screw, which BTW, he only uses in 5%of his patients. I probably overdid it in the gym after the surgery because I am an idiot. I lifted too fast and too much weights. I am going to see my surgeon tomorrow. I will keep you updated. I also had a recent Pelvic CT Scan and the surgeon looked at it. I believe he must have seen something in order to mention more surgery. Oh well... It sounds like you are having open hernia surgery? Also that you have 2hernias? Why do you have to wait a month?
Thanks, Good Luck, Joe.

It felt pretty bad the first few days for me...part of it was from the anesthesia. If you have never been put under, you might want to request something for nausea, as some people get nausea from it. The first pain med I got didn't do squat, but once i got on a different drug I was able to manage. Getting up from laying down is the worst part... from sitting wasn't so bad cause you can use mostly your arms. It took me a good one to two days before I was able to walk on my own. Never had a problem with going to the bathroom at all... the struggle was getting off the bed and TO the bathroom.

I was off the RX after about 2 weeks, and using Motrin to keep the edge off for the next week or two. Within a month I was technically 'healed' according to my surgeon, but i gave myself an extra month of taking it easy just to be safe. I felt like I was at that sensitive place where if I wasn't careful, I could easily overdue it.

Also, my surgeon told me not to drive for at least a week, so I was fortunate enough to have someone able to take me to work the following week for a few days, also while i was on the meds still.

My incision area still gets aggravated every now and then... I think it may just be my overdoing it. It has been a little over 2 months, but 95% of the time I feel fine now.

I had become accustomed to bracing myself for sneezes, otherwise my hernia would hurt like the dickens... after the surgery for a while, I kept doing it out of habit, even though I didn't need to. :p
