groin hernia repair

Barium... yuck! Good luck with your appointment.

Mine was small enough to use the classic method fortunately.

tUrRrRa: Make sure to take it easy. My doc had me wait at least 30 days before lifting anything over 40 lbs... but I gave myself 6 weeks as I wasn't quite feeling up to par yet. I was back to work the week after my surgery, which was on a Tuesday, but I healed slower than I anticipated so give yourself plenty of time. I am a PC/Network Technician so I sit most of the day. Depending on your job you might want to give yourself a little more time if you can.

Also, if you have never had surgery before, you may want to get some pain meds from the doctor the day before so you have them available. You really should have someone available to help you for at least the first few days... it took me a couple days to be able to walk on my own from the meds and anesthetics. Some people get nauseous from the anesthetics, so if you haven't been put under before, you might mention it to the doc, so you can have something ready should that happen.

Another thing: some meshes have pending litigation and class action suits... mtmt and Cowpin8, you may want to find out what kind of mesh was used and do some research. Obviously litigation isn't ideal, but if it is too late to remove/replace the meshes, it may be you only option for getting some reparations.

Just got back from the hernia surgeon. I had an ilioinguinal nerve block shot. A large needle inserted RIGHT INTO MY LOWER GROIN!!! Owwwwwwwwww!!! Alright...it wasnt that bad but I cannot feel my left leg right now. I hope it helps with my groin pain. I also had the Barium Pelvic CT Scan. Showed some minor stuff but nothing my surgeon said should cause pain. The surgeon finally said that maybe one of titanium screws he used in my abdomen is causing the pain. He may surgically remove it, IF the Nerve Block shot doesnt help in a week from today. These titanium screws are only used in 5% of his hernia surgeries. Lucky me. Feel free to ask any questions about the ilioinguinal nerve block shot as I just had it a few hours ago. I wish everyone well. Oh yeah...All these problems because of weightlifting for almost 20 years. I thought weightlifting was good for you. Oh well...

I would be seriously concerned about anything that messes with your nerves. I read that the Ilio-inguinal nerve block with ropivicaine should be avoided.

I hope he didn't use that... I would be doing research before getting any more shots. From what I have found, most of the people who posted about those shots on the net, have to get the constantly/repetitively, and other complications from the shot itself. You really should research stuff yourself before just taking a doctors word for it... doctors know a lot, but there is a lot they don't know as well. People are seriously injured or suffer other effects from just taking a doctors word for it, and just doing what they say without asking questions or researching things themselves. This post has really opened my eyes to that fact. I have a mom who is always harping on me to check things out... and now I am glad I did, before I had my surgery. If I hadn't, I would have probably gotten the mesh repair, and risked suffering the same symptoms you guys are now dealing with.

Did he use the screws to hold the mesh in place? Seems a little extreme to me...

As for weightlifting, that is one of the most common causes for groin hernias in males... it's a weakness in the abdomen wall where the tubes pass through to the testicles. Males are generally more susceptible, especially those who weightlift.

Yes my surgeon did use the titanium screws to hold the mesh in place. He now thinks that maybe one of those screws might be the cause of my pain. He wants to do more surgery to remove the screw. I am so confused right now. I think I am going to let him take it out.

Wow, I hope everything turns out okay for you Cowpin8. I am sure that is very frustrating. Is this the same doctor that you had the actually surgery performed with? Or is this a new one?

EducatedPanther, I didn't realize how much difficulty mesh repairs can cause later on, so now I am even more thankful that my surgeon is going to repair my hernias without mesh. About how large would you estimate your hernias to be? Mine are not all that noticeable, but I can feel them and slightly see a bulge at times. They would be egg-shaped, although smaller than eggs (one third of an egg in size or half possibly- hard to tell). I hope that the old-fashioned surgery without mesh works just fine!

Taking off more than one week of work will be very difficult as this is a very busy time for us. We often can't get time off around the holidays. I am an auditor at a bank, so luckily I can sit most of the time and can try to get comfortable as best as I can at my desk. The people I work with are great, so I am sure they will be willing to help as much as they can (I just want to keep the surgery kind of private other than my boss knowing). The only other surgery I had is wisdom teeth removal, so I've done the anesthesia and luckily didn't get any nausea for it. I just slept pretty much all of the first day when I got home and don't remember a thing until after I was in the car leaving. I have a few people willing to stay home with me, so that will be great. I will definitely look into getting the pain pills ahead of time (did that for wisdom teeth surgery) and will likely sleep a lot while taking those as well.

Wow, now I'm rethinking the weight lifting I used to do! I don't do anything too strenuous, but I don't want to risk the hernia coming back after the surgery. Perhaps I'll go back to Pilates and stick with just using my 10-pounders at home rather than using heavier weights and machines. Luckily I can manage to get good results just using body weight and lighter weights. Right now I can't even use my 10-pound weights per my doctor's instructions. I can only do exercises (very carefully) with my own body weight and can't do anything too strenuous. My hernias were not caused by weight lifting though, but I do VERY well think I made my left hernia worse by doing inner thigh exercises (the hip adductor machine). I felt pain and had mild swelling, I noticed one side of the groin was larger than the other. If I hadn't have done this, I probably would have NEVER realized I had hernias to begin with! I have to be thankful for that injury so I can take care of it before it gets worse!
