A statement I read over and over again on UK forums is that the UK is at the vanguard of making gritty films and TV shows. It's about the only thing Brits seem to take pride of with the UK.

What makes them "grittier" than Hollywood, Bollywood, Hong Kong, Japanese, French, Dutch, German, Russian... ..films and TV shows?
