Grindhouse

Grindhouse opened on Friday here in the U.S. and so far (according to analysts) it hasn't pulled in the expected numbers. It only made $11 million during its opening weekend -- far short of the $20+ million most have predicted. Sunday isn't even over!

I think the fact that it's a 3-hour movie probably hurt it because due to its long runtime, theaters can only play it for a very limited amount of time a day -- which means that while it may play to packed houses, not many people will be able to see it.

The movie will probably pick up after this holiday weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing it. :)

I'm sorry. I thought people overseas knew about this movie. It's a film by Quentin Tarentino & Robert Rodriguez. It's an exploitation movie that harkens back to the days of the cheap thrill films of the 1970s. Grindhouse consists of 2 films which are shown back to back with faux movie trailers shown in between. The 2 movies are "Planet Terror" & "Death Proof".

I'm looking forward to it!! The girl with a gun for a leg just looks marvellous!!

11 million in the weekend in the US isnt very good at all. but it will make its money back. they always do.

people predicting 30 million OW for a r rated 3 hour cult film = silly.

it slighly underperformed, 15 woulda been fine.

will eventually make its money back, especially in mainland europe they are splitting it into 2 releases

Yes, maybe the Easter opening didn't help. I went to the cinema this weekend and it was really empty. The quietest Saturday I've seen in a while.

I don't want them to split the releases. I want to see them both back-to-back.

I really hope they dont split it when Grindhouse is released in the UK as I want to see the film as it was meant to be seen. However after that opening weekend I can see why they are considering it. I just hope it doesnt happen!
Its just a pity that in the UK we have to wait untill 31st May to see it though as I cant wait to see it. I also have a feeling that it will do better in Europe than in the US!

I just saw this on the news here in the U.S.:

If business doesn't pick up soon, the studio is thinking about recutting the movie and re-releasing it (in North America) as 2 seperate films.

I would imagine that Tarantino & Rodriguez will not be happy if this happens.

Up until now on the imdb we are the only country in Europe to not have separate releases.Hopefully we get it the way it was meant to be seen. Was there not talk before it was released about them possibly splitting the films up outside of North America anyway?
We never really had Grindhouses anyway did we.

on aintitcoolnews.com RR seemed fine with them being split, because he ageed that Europe didnt really know the concept of the grindhouse, so it didnt matter if they saw it seperately, especially because they get the bonus of seeing each film in its entirety

If they split it for the UK I seriously won't go and see it. I've been rabid about this coming out for over a year, but if they remove the "event" aspect of this movie then it's just like every other sodding flick!

Whether or not Brits have a clue about the nature of grindhouse cinema is besides the point, it was finally going to be a reasonably original concept for noughties cinema! Plus where would the trailers go? I'm raging at them even considering it! I feel bereft!

PS I LOVE Rose McGowan and I'm so glad T&R gave her a chance. She can't act but she is utterly fabulous.

What a pointlessly venomous post! The US got the double feature too but there are threats to split it only a few weeks after release. So I apologise Mr Weinstein, you appear to know exactly what is happening in the future. All hail

Well it seems the news for "Grindhouse" keeps getting worse. According to CNN, the movie fell to #10 in it's second weekend (a 63 percent drop from its poor debut) making only $4.2 million. The movie is almost effectively dead here in the U.S..

If the rumors are true, then they may be able to salvage it by splitting it in 2 and re-releasing it. I've got a feeling that we'll be seeing it on DVD this summer. Its downfall is pretty shocking considering the critical raves and mega-ad campaign this movie had.

the problem with splitting it is that will cost the company MILLLLIONS and its not guaranteed that it will be a success. So a quick DVD release is very likely.

this film is looking like guaranteed cult status though.

Apparantly they didnt advertise online, BIG MISTAKE
