Greatest Western

What, in your opinion, is the greatest Western movie of all time (If someone says Back To The Future Part 3, I may have to cyber kill you! :) )

I'm not a fan of the old style cowboys and Indians Westerns - more of a Clint fan myself. So I'd go for Josey Wales, and Fistful of Dollars.

Shane is good too, and High Noon
Oh, and Carry on Cowboy :)

The most cracking scene in a Western I ever saw was the Mexican stand off in The Good, The Bad & The Ugly.

Sergio Leone takes some beating.

I am not a western fan so I have just asked my dad who is unfortunately.

His favourites are:

Big Country
The Searchers
Unforgiven
Shane
Once Upon a Time in the West
The Wild Bunch
High Noon

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Close runners-up:

The Searchers
High Noon
High Plains Drifter
The Magnificent Seven
Once Upon a Time In the West

Some of my favorites, no particular order:

El-topo
Django the bastard
High Plains Drifter
Solider blue
Good ther bad & the ugly
Fistfull of dollars
Once upon a time in the west
The wild bunch
The long riders
Unforgiven
Hang em High
A man called horse

...especially the scene where he rescues Marrisol. Music goes dramatic when he throws his sword across the room and lamps the bad guy's chest out. Then he grabs Marrisol, reunites her with her child and husband, and orders them to leave across the border.

You have to hand it to Sergio for his fight scenes in the Eastwood trilogys... I take my hat off if ever I see a COMPLETELY uncut version for For A Few Dollars More. The UK DVD is still the shonky edit. ITV showed a spanish print (with English dialogue) in 1990, which had the whole scene intact.

The Good the bad and the ugly, The Shootist and Bite the bullet are my three favourites. Although, perhaps the latter two are not stickly Westerns.

Not a movie as such, but the Original Lonesome Dove is a television masterpiece.
