Greatest Bassists

I think my favourite (not necessarily the greatest) bassists are Victor Wooten, Les Claypool, Trevor Dunn, and Mike Gordon. The bassist from Stereolab has some pretty cool/quirky basslines that I like, although they're not exactly hard to play. That's about all I've got to say on the subject.

There is a greatest guitarist thread, so I'm making a greatest bassists thread. Muahahaha. My list:

1. Victor Wooten
2. Steve Swallow
3. Jaco Pastorius
4. Louis Johnson
5. Stanley Clarke
6. Jay Bentley
7. Klaus Floride
8. Alaine (from The Devotchkas)
9. Steve Hansgen
10. Billy Sheehan

simon gallup of the cure, not necessarily due to his "skills" but to his melodies!
check out a forest, play for today, charlotte sometimes.

I saw Arrested Development live and there was this dude that played bass with them. The craziest bass player i've seen. Played the thing like an electric guitar.

Bass is easier to play at a beginner's level when you're little more than a low frequency timekeeper, but far harder to master IMO.

It's only too easy to listen to a guitarist shredding and decide that bass is easier. But when you think about it, anyone can sit in a basement honing their guitar skills for five years until they're a walking fret wanker. But tight-knit bassists who can truly groove and write the perfect line for the song come along rarely.

These guys are pretty mainstream, I am sure there is some German guy shredding an 8 string bass in his basement, but nobody knows about him... as a bassist, here are a couple, of many I listen too...

geddy lee

les claypool

Bobby Sheehen

Jaco

Charles Mingus

Horace Panter

John Paul Jones

Bootsy

too many to list...

That's because it's James Jamerson on bass for most of that album. :D

And Andy Rourke is a pretty good bassist... but like most bassists, he gets shunned to the side. :(
