Great Film Performances

Sorry, Natalie, I agree with you that Amy Adams was tremendous in Enchanted.

But I think Leigh's performance in GWTW is one of the all time worst...overacting personified. To the point of toe curling embarrassment. Gable however is great.

He annoyed the shit out of me in that, sanctimonious berk as he was. Guess I'm alone with that one tho.

I'll throw Bruno Ganz into the hat for his portrayal of Hitler in Downfall. Staggering.

I know it's not a whole film but I thought the scene in True Romance between Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken was one of the most amazing pieces of film acting I've ever watched.

In terms of films out lately..... I think Gary Oldman was outstanding in TDK.... Shame he is being totally overlooked by others to Heath Ledgers portrayal as the Joker.

Patricia Neal in Hud (If ever an Oscar was deserved it was this one)

James Mason in A Star Is Born (as good as Judy Garland is in her role, and she is fantastic IMO, it was Mason's performance that really got to me.......outstanding stuff)

Jodie Foster in The Silence Of The Lambs

Kathy Bates in Misery

Bette Davis in The Letter, The Little Foxes, All About Eve ( when she was good she was fantastic)

There are plenty more but that'll do for now.:)

Some great actresses there but I personally, I thought these were stronger performances:

Jodie Foster - The Accused
Kathy Bates - Dolores Claiborne
Bette Davis - What Ever Happened To Baby Jane

Denzel Washington in Training Day.
Jack Nicholson in The Shining / One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest
Dakota Fanning in War Of The WorlRAB
Johnny Depp in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory / Sweeney Todd / Pirates Of The Caribbean / Edward ScissorhanRAB :)
Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight
Will Smith in The Pursuit Of Happyness
Jake Gyllenhaal in Donnie Darko
Drew Barrymore in E.T

I think Vivien Leigh's performance in GWTW suits the film perfectly even if it does seem a tad histrionic to modern eyes. Gable is, as you say, great as he seems to "underact" his part and his is more of a presence than a performance because of it imo.................having said that I think Leigh is fabulously good in A Streetcar Named Desire. Her fragility opposite Brando's brooding masculinity is heartbreaking to watch. It also helps that she was a stunning beauty too.:)

Daniel Day Lewis:In the name of the father.

Robert De Niro:Raging Bull.

Steve Martin: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Christian Bale: The Machinist.

Ralph Fiennes: The English Patient.
