GRAW people

Thanks to the guys that sent invites, but tonite I'm just gonna check out the single player... but I'm up for some games tomorrow night.

Well they can't just "hook up some dedicated servers" to solve any latency problems. And while graphics are rendered on the client side they still have an affect on overall performance over a network

I suspect part of the issue is the way those effects alter gameplay... if one person is blinded by an explosion but the other guy isn't, or if lighting is computed differently for one player than another, it could alter game balance. Trying to sync all these actions WOULD bog a network, so it's easier to back down on the graphic bells and whistles for the sake of better play.

I haven't tried online yet myself, but the folks that did say its fairly substantial.

I'm not too worried... I think it'll be worth it if the gameplay is smooth.

Exactly, which is why (it seems at least) the textures/models don't take as big a hit as the lighting/particles do. Rendering thousands of exploding particles on one machine is one thing, but when that machine then has to tell the server, who then has to tell all other clients that there are thousands of particles to render at this one spot, and that is going on at numerous spots at once, it's just not feasible right now (just my opinion )

I seriously just about died trying to get this fucker

I thought I'd called Game Crazy, which is by my house on the other side of the city from work. Get there, fucker is called Game Rush Call them again, get location (N. 89th, I thought), on the OTHER side of the city. Get to the OTHER side of the city, and realize he meant the fucking south side. Drive to the OTHER side of the city... thats like 4 times if you are keeping count... I get there and got the last copy as this pissed off dude walks in right behind me and gets screwed.

Three very close calls as I'm driving 90mph and people keep trying to hit me. Almost beat up an old lady in front of the store who bitched about my driving. All the while I'm 30 minutes late for my appt. with the phone company...

But I got the damn thing, now I'm going to pass out...

easier to say "damage at xx,yy,zz, radius rr" than to say "render eleventy billion particles arrayed around point xx,yy,zz, velocity vv, vectors v1,v2,v3, ... v11tybillion, occluded by objects o1,o2,o3,etc,define each particle as a light source, etc etc etc"

the server doesn't give a rat's ass how many polygons or how big the textures are on each model, as long as every client has the same polygons and same textures.

I had about 10 mins to play it before I went back to work. After playing COD2 it took a while to get used to the different button configs during the training op.

In other news, did anyone else get another xbox live update? I got the original one a few weeks ago, but got another one today...maybe for COD2 multiplayer?
