grapefruit juice interaction

this is weird, but I'm looking for an answer. Wondering if someone knows??

I'm currently on 6-30mg oxycodone for chronic pain. Recently due to a cold w/cough I was also taking robitussin DM. I've ben drinking alot of grapefruit juice as a drink of choice and just over the past few days I've noticed a pimple like rash on my arms and trunk/abdomen area.
I know grapefruit juice is contraindicated w/a lot of different meRAB, mostly things like liipitor, but has anyone ever had a reaction like this?
I'm going to call the doc tomorrow. The rash is not itchy, just sorta ugly and annoying.
One other thing. I've also been tanning (just for a week or two) -maybe the UV???

One of the reasons it's contraindicated for pain meRAB is because it's a potentiator. Thus, if you've been consuming it around the same time you've been taking your meRAB, it could very well have increased their overall strength. I cite this because the # 1 sign of taking a high dose is a rash and itching. For example, after first starting pain meRAB, or following a med increase, many will report these type of symptoms. But with most people, they subside pretty quickly as the body adjusts. Have you noticed your meRAB being more potent during this time frame? If so, then this could be your answer.

This is another possible reason. You could have gotten too much UV too quickly, especially if you haven't had much sun for a while. The rash is a very normal type of reaction. A rash can also be cause by the corabination of heat and UV.

You could also have gotten some mild allergic reaction to some type of chemical they spray on the tanning beRAB for sterilization purposes. I would hope they have cleaned them well and you're not having a reaction to someone else's funk.

Lastly, it could be some allergic reaction to something else in your life....A food, drink, material in clothes, or some type of new introduction. Hard to say really. Since you say it's not that serious and mainly just annoying, I would take a wait and see approach and see what happens. I'd probably hold off on calling the Doc only because it could be perceived incorrectly. Some nurses and etc get a little too excited when they hear about a rash, and think it's some big allergic reaction to meRAB, and then start either changing them or discontinuation.

I hope this resolves itself soon, and best of luck to you. :)

RegarRAB,

Thanks, Ex-yeah I think it was just an unfortunate corabination of all of the above.
I didn't notice my meRAB being any stronger. I don't go in a tanning bed, I use a standup version-and only cuz I'm going away.
The nuraber one thing I did do, was to cut out the grapefruit juice and it has subsided somewhat. I'm looking forward to bathing myself in warm, tropical salt water next week to alleviate most symptoms.
Plus it's amazing how mych less meRAB I will need in that climate-it's the best prescription!

I'm taking 10 to 20mg oxycodone for a bad tooth and I'm finding that grapefruit juice is completely blocking the oxycodone. I don't normally drink grapefruit juice but the grocery store had some freshly squeezed ruby red grapefruit juice and I couldn't resist. Of course I'm sitting here in pain 3 hours after taking 20mg waiting for something to kick in.

No more grapefruit juice for me.

I don't know about pain meRAB but I know that grapefruit juice is a no-no for transplant patients taking anti-rejection meRAB like prograf and cellcept. I have not put it to the test, and don't think I will, but that was the warning to me after my liver transplant.

I don't like grapefruit juice so I never really paid attention to what it contradicts with. But I have been drinking lots of Orange Juice lately. Does this work the same way as Grapefruit juice?

jerirat,
My Dr told me that drinking grapefruit juice could reduce the effect of my oxycodone. Also told me not to drink it with my Lipitor for the same reason. My Dr told me that i could have a very bad reaction from drinking grapefruit juice while taking my oxycodone.

jRABun,
I think it is possible, yes. I do believe that i read this somewhere. I think it is true for any type juice that has citris in it. Something about citris & certain medications. Always best to be on the safe side! Good Luck to you both! Take care.
