Grange Hill vs Byker Grove

:D HeHe!.Was watching Never Say Never Again(Bond film) this afternoon.Classic fight with Sean Connery and big Pat Roach(Bomber in Auf Weider).I kept on repeating his catchphrase 'Bomber'll go for that!'.
 
Byker Grove was amazing!

Loved that show, I think both shows had their high points but by the end they were very watered down and aimed at primary school kids *sighs*
 
Donna Air as Charlie, and Jill Halfpenny were both in Byker too.
And why has no one mentioned the infamous catchphrases yet?
(Admittedly, Grange Hill catchphrases do tend to revolve around what ever period you used to watch the show, but...)

I was more of a Byker Grove fan but I did watch both programmes. I wish Jeff from BG didn't die.
I do remember s/l's vaguely, think Waterloo Road is more modern with their s/l's and is not shown during the 'after school hours TV' so I can't really compare.
 
Grange Hill was awesome viewing for well over 20 years.
The last half dozen or so were hard work and the Liverpool relocation didn't help.

5 minutes of Geordie accents on Byker Grove made me switch that off so I never saw it .
The clip of the Ant & Dec scene where one is blinded is embarrassing so I think I had a lucky escape.
 
Grange Hill was pretty groundbreaking at its initiation.

I have fond memories (and dvds) of its inception despite being quite young (and probably under its target age but I was slightly precocious and my parents were fairly liberal) and I still love those episodes. However, I would say that for both storylines and acting, the golden years were 1982-1986. The best first year group were the ones to feature Jonah, Zammo, Annette, Fay and Roland. Mind you, that was definitely my era so I may be a teensy bit biased.
 
I watched both of these shows when I was a kid, Grangehill I would say was better and had some classic characters, I like the Gonge, Hollo hollaway, Robbie, the original Bansky, Mr Baxtor, Mr Bronson, Zammo, Ziggy, Trev Cleaver days the best, Gripper Stepson was the evilest bully ever, it had loads of humour in it as well as being gritty. The grove I don't remember as well to be honest some names I remember Spuggy yes, Frazer her brother, some cheeky kid Winston, speedy, and of course PJ, Duncan and the best Geoff
 
I never watched Byker Grove but Grange Hill was always essential viewing for me. I watched every series from the beginning. Agree with the above comments in that it did go downhill in its later years after relocating to Liverpool (note - this has nothing to do with Liverpool itself - I watched Brookside for its entire 21-year run).



It moved to Liverpool as a result of Phil Redmond's Mersey TV company taking over its production.
 
:) I was at High School from 1977-1981.So i grew up at virtually the same time as Tucker Jenkins.Loved Grange Hill for many years.
I see theres a 'Gripper Stebson' on DS.Better watch what i say.:eek:
 
No, it was an issue based teen drama. They used to tackle hard hitting issues like Bullying, Underage Pregnancy, Sexuality, Drugs, Self Harm, the usual stuff...

But towards the end they had silly storylines, and content aimed at much younger children, such as sausage eating contests, spoof episodes, and generally a step back from reality :)
 
I watched both shows aswell and I think looking back I preferred Grange Hill. My era was the Justine/Chrissie Manirwing/Ziggy/Robbie one in the late 80's. I was in junior school then and I remember some friends parents not being happy that a schoolgirl was pregnant (Chrissie) lol how times have changed now! I watched it throughtout my teens too I just generally liked the storylines and the actors in general (the girl playing Judi Jeffries was a great actress RIP) but as soon as they killed off half the school in the fire I gave up (and was probably too old to watch it by then!)
For some reason I do remember Byker always being quite sad/moving as opposed to GH being mostly funny, someone died in a car crash in one of the first episodes and Jill Halfpennys sister died by being electrocuted. PJ & Duncan were good though - wonder where those actors ended up haha!!
There was also an ITV rival for me growing up called Children's ward set in a hospital in Manchester - launched a springboard for many a Coronation Street actor/actress!
 
i loved Byker Grove, remember crying when PJ got blinded and singing along to our radio rocks.

never really got into grange hill, not sure why.
 
Yeah i remember Children's ward, Just looking at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0244335/fullcredits#cast It amazing how many of the cast have gone on to be in soaps and stuff, there lots of names I recognize. heres a few from Corrie Tyrone, Maria (Samia Smith), the woman who goes out with Jack, Sarah Platt (Tina O Brian), Molly Dobbs, Vicky Mcdonald and Ashley all from Corrie were in it, Ralf Little was in it too.
