Grand Unified Recommendation Thread

The First few episodes reminded me of Twin Peaks.



I would certainly hope that people asking for recomendations would be able to spend $$ for dvd's.

Twelve Kingdoms is a good show. So is Noir. Interlude is short.

The show you're probably looking for is Tweeny Witches.

In all actuality the only way to really find the truly precious gem of a show/book/film is to blind buy. You get a lot of misses too, but a gem is worth more than many pebbles.

In the line of the entire retro tragedy like Kikaider: try hunting down some episodes of The Skull Man (2007, 13 episodes). It's one of those shows you may like or you may find boring but alot of people found Witch Hunter Robin boring.
 
I have no problem paying for DVRAB... when they're not overpriced to the point I have to pay over 60 dollars for only 22 episodes. 29.99 seems the more appropriate, 39.99 at the very most.
 
I've heard that argument before, but the thing is, while I can probably get the DBZ DVD's foor 20 dollars each, the Dragon Ball ones cost like 50 dollars each. Plus, the first thirteen episodes have yet to be released uncut in America.
 
Hey, guys.

I'm looking for a recommendation, myself.

Something, preferably Seinen (doesn't have to be, though. I'm game for whatever) that has an interesting storyline. Something that pulls you in. I'm not really looking for anything with "blood + boobs z0mG", just something with interesting characters dealing in an interesting situation.

For reference, I like the following:

Berserk
Monster
20th Century Boys
Gantz (even though it falls into the earlier traps I mentioned, it's still good enough to pull me in)
Liar Game
Akumetsu
Hour Of The Mice
Doubt

Shonen stuff like Beck, Yu Yu Hakusho, or Trigun is fine with me. I don't mind manga or anime, either.
 
If you liked 20th century boys i recommend "Monster" and "Pluto", monsters from the same author and i think Pluto is too, both of them are very good. And if you havent read the sequel to 20th Century boys (i doubt you havent), read 21st Century Boys too.

Also try Vinland Saga, Eden:Its an Endless world, Zetman, DeadMan Wonderland, and Holyland. Their all Seinen (except maybe for Deadman Wonderland), good, all that stuff you said too.

Hmmm, this ones Shounen, but also suggest you read Psyren.

(also, this ones Korean (so it reaRAB left to right) and has the shabiest/badest looking art ive ever seen, but read Ares, trust me.....)
 
As for seinen, I'd recommend Blue Gender, if you haven't already tried it. However, the characters may become a problem for you in the middle of the series (in that you might find them disturbing, less interesting, or annoying). Although, at least one character still stays relatively likable throughout the series. Just be warned that this is a low-budget anime, so you'll have to be willing to look past some of its weaker animation sequences. That said, I'd still say its worth your time, since it has a good story, some decent character development, and while it is rather gory, it doesn't focus all that much on the gore when compared to the story.

As for shounen, there are 3 "manga," in particular, that I would like to recommend:

The first is Rurouni Kenshin, and even if you weren't so fond of the anime with all of its flaws (even though the 2nd arc was still great in it, IMO), the manga is much better in its execution of the story line. It also has very enjoyable characters.

The second is Claymore, which I only recently started reading, upon darklordavaitor's recommendation of it to me, but I'm already enjoying it, and its definitely a lot more interestin that most other currently running shounen jump titles, IMO.

I would also like to recommend Hikaru no Go, but that might be stretching it, since I'm not sure if it will reach your interest level. In ways, it may feel like a typical shounen, but it utilizes the common shounen aspects in a good way, making for a really interesting and addicting story about growth and development in a game that very few Americans know how to play. That said, I do know how to play the game of Go, myself, and I love it, even though I'm terrible at it. If anyone here does play it, I'd love to challenge you online in Yahoo's go lobby.
 
Does anyone know anything about the fantasy series Utawarerumono? This had avoided my notice until I saw the trailer for it on the third One Piece set. I'm intrigued.
 
I reviewed vol. 1 at TZ. That's all I've seen, though.

Be forewarned: If you are interested in that complete collection from FUNi, you may want to reconsider and get the ADV singles on the cheap. AFAIK, the collection doesn't contain the omake videos.
 
O.K.... it would appear that Sailor Moon is a no go no matter how you try to approach it . Every DVD costs like 70 bucks, and most of the episodes have yet to be dubbed.
 
Seasons 3 and 4 were available dubbed and uncut. Unfortunately all the R1 Sailor Moon DVRAB are out of print because of Toei issues. So if you're looking at ebay for SM DVRAB, of course they would be $70 a single. They're rare now.
 
I don't really look at that many series, but I'd like to see some. I don't know what's worth looking at. Here's a list of series I've already seen:

Now for series I've heard of and kinda wanna look into along with reasons why I haven't:

Berserk (1: I feel kinda odd watching/reading a Seinin series in the same house as a 4-year old and my mom (mainly the boobs) 2: The way the anime enRAB)
Gantz: (Same as Berserk only with the filler of death virus . That and ADV Crackhou....errrr Films)
Fruits Basket (I dunno about looking into Shoujo stuff. This may be the only exception)
Ouran HSHC: (Same reason as Fruits Basket.)
Gin Tama (I'm lazy)
Black Cat (I'm lazy)
Inuyasha (Because, from what I've been told, it's Seinfeld with demons)
Full Metal Alchemist (Never gotten a big enough push to take a good look)
Tokyo Underground (Seems kinda cool in theory, but idk)
Flame of Recca (Seen a bit of episode 1, but I dunno)
Arc the Lad (Same as TU)
Code Geass (To see what the fuss is about)
Gurren Laggan (same as Geass)



If you can help me any, it would be appreciated.
 
Code Geass and Gurren Lagann are amazingly great. Fruit Basket is also not that bad, I have not seen the complete series but seen about 11 episodes so far. Ouran Host club on the other hand is simply hilarious, I'm a guy and I still loved it a lot, yet it took me a few episodes to get used to it.

I also think you should try out Kiba as well, it's a very well done anime. It starts off slow but picks up really fast after episode 13.

And you have not watched Fullmetal? Fullmetal Alchemist is a really awesome show that gets a bit strange near the end. Really a lot of the ones you named are really good.

Sonic X (a great all ages series for a great character!)
The Myazaki/studio ghibli movies (Japans Disney, But still has a soul..LULZ!)


MANGA

Gun Blaze west (its like one piece but a western)
Ruroni Kenshin (historical fiction at its best)
Rosario+Vampire (Action, comedy, & Girls with supernatural powers!)
Dr. Slump (same reason as the anime!)
 
I agree with what is mostly listed, let me highlight these already mention series.

Eureka 7 - one of my favorite animes of recent times. It is very out there, in the statous of the world, but that what makes it cool.

Code Geass - not withstanding the criticism of the second half of the series, it was a cool series, with one of the greatest main characters ever.

Another one I have to add, that I think is one of the best un talked about or unwatched animes.

Blue Dragon / Blue Dragon: Tenkai No Shichi Ryuu - it can be both funny and serious of the same time, and have some of the best characters from both protagonist and antagonist sides.

As for the stuff you listed

Gintama - It wins quite epicly.
Ouran High Host Club - I also don't generally care for Shoujo, but if you've watched five minutes of any shoujo series, Ouran will crack you up, for it is TRUFAX. Also it's funny in it's own right.
