Grand Designs new series.....

Yes I'd like to know this as well. Because yes its sunny for about 4 days of the year and those bricks will release that heat over time but by mid winter they'll be no heat left to disperse. It's not like the bricks have a timer on them for dispersing heat.

That mini test they did with the blow torch, he said gosh thats so hot to touch. Not sure I'd want a wall I couldn;t touch. And the walls on the inside of the house, how do they get the sunlight to heat them up? Or have I missed something, is it human heat that warms them up as well. Do they need to start hugging the walls?
 
An impressively run project by Grand Designs standarRAB. But she did admit she was only under budget because she forgot she could reclaim the VAT. That's a 17.5% saving she hadn't planned for. So actually she was well over budget.

I found the interior a bit of a mess, but liked the overall design of the house. It really suited the site well, with no lofty internal spaces. There didn't seem to be any internal access from the house to the garage, so that's quite a long walk back up the drive, horrible if it's raining.
 
I'm araid I used to look forward to GD but the houses are just odd now, or eco obsessed where are the uberhouses we used to get and look forward to rewatching every 6 months or so
 
I think she said she miscalculated the VAT - not that she forgot about it. I remember calculating it when i watched it and she would have been on budget without the VAT coming back.

I thought that about the garage too - there was stairs up from the back of the garage to close to the back of the house but certainly no under cover access. This would be a must for me if I ever did my own place! nothing worse than having several trips to empty the car boot of shopping when it is wet, also worse when you have to lock the car between trips cos someone might pinch the remaining bags!
 
This in my opinion is one of the best GD's ever.

From the start, this woman showed real fortitude, and the people involved in the project, (such as the architect and main contractor) showed real care in delivering a home they all should be proud of.

An excellent episode, and I hope this family have many happy years in their new home......
 
I caught the end the man needed a slap into palce. That window was out of palce and he was an irk.

TGhe place last night liked it fromt he outside, liked teh floor once done. Didn't likle the bare walls adn those mezzanines werent part of tjhe plans were they?I think they added those once they realise how cell block small the rooms were. And the girl had to paint her room anything is better than bare brick.

The woman at the end looked and talked as if she hated the place and also spoke about the families... me thinks they don't get on well and all hate each other but are now intoo much debt to get out of there.

Sue the windmill people and get a replacement on top.
 
The only major change I would have made would have been to extend a passageway from the garage into the house via a sub-level basement beneath the kitchen. That way you could walk into the house from the car with all the shopping and not get wet and the basement would have given additional storage space and a laundry area.
 
Hated the house last night...

concrete block bare walls..?? welcoming??? i suppose so if you've moved from STALIG 13..! . and putting their daughters into those TINY rooms... when there was so much space taken up by a "corridor" and the rooms had no privacy at all.. to me it smacks of thinking only of their own personal "neeRAB to be at one with the earth and use its resources sensibly" at the cost of their daughters space and neeRAB..:rolleyes:

possibly the worst house and smuggest annoying couple ive ever seen on Grand Designs.. lets hope normal service is resumed next week...
 
In the episode where people here were complaining about the man being obstinate, domineering to his wife etc, I found Kevin McCloud far more annoying than that man.
 
I loved the simplicity of the house also. I really liked the idea of it being so open planned but it did seem odd how the boyfreind was essentially ignored, did he even have a workspace? It seemed she got her office but he didn't have one or for that matter much that really belonged to him.

Oh, and I agree with the comment about Kevin, he did seem to fall in love with her!
