Grand Designs new series.....

Now I reckon that building is an icon for all the green movement stanRAB for. No views of the lanRABcape they chose to live in, spartan, echoing halls of discomfort.
Its all about compromising your standard of living to revel in your smugness at being green.
Its the Grand Designs version of that lady on the news recently who showered with a bucket standing on the floor so that she could use the water to flush her toilet.

At least these two did it with their own house rather than using a client.

I've just watched this and I cried at the sadness of it all. Ninja Kitty - you have summed up how I felt watching it. Abb 40 - I just wanted the architect to give her a hug.

The house is lovely and her architect did a great job. Pleased Ch 4 showed this one.

she clearly wanted to cry at the end when talking about him although the rest of the time like talking about the tiles was quite matter of fact. Which I'll also be. The son stopping nightmares there, that's because all the memories of his dad has now been erased. As far as he knows he is in a brand new house and his dad isn;t stamped anywhere in there.

The house itself was disgusting on the outside. Hated the roof. Inside I liked it though. Although found the rooms smaller than they looked like the should have been.

Interesting episode. Huge contrast against the usual Kevin fertility effect.

The architect was an absolute star.

Saw a repeat of the Tom Perry Cloud 8 second episode from Series 4 earlier in the week. Anyone know how this turned out?

I also thought this but there was a bedroom in the back corridor I thought. I notice they didn't show much of the children's bedrooms maybe they showed all they could but I blinked?

Hmmm I always wonder what happens after a couple of yeasr, boredom?

Yes, the worktop was one of the worst things I have ever seen, even 'changing rooms' would have made a better job ;)

Perhaps it is time for the show to be split, a series of ridiculous 'eco homes' and then a series of the brilliant over the top opulent homes that we used to see.

I really liked her, she was so calm and serene but I didn't like the house at all. It just wasn't my 'thing' at all. I thought the chimney was very odd.

I'm not a fan of all the eco houses either! I think Grand Designs has lost the Grand bit in recent series.

You say that like it's a positive thing! :p

Have there been any structural engineers on the show? They always say they turn the madness of architects into something that can realistically be built.

I'm bored of all these middle class bores with their phony eco concerns. They should just repeat the Ben Law episode every week.

Love that project. It's probably my favourite and what a character he was.
I loved the bit when Kevin was remarking on the water leaking through the roof and ruining the underside and Tom said "Thanks for pointing that out, Kevin". :D

It would be great to have a revisit but Kevin seemed pretty final in his closing comment on the last show that it was their final visit.

I hope I'm talking about the right one. The one with the wing roof where he broke his leg, right?

Does anyone know when this is due on our screens? The last I heard was just "Autumn" but that was quite a while ago and I've not been able to find out anything else since.

AS THAT THE ONE ON A LAKE? If so the revisited series on More 4 has been back and they are living there. I think they ran out of money and couldn't furnish it properly. The whole time they built that all I thought was... imagine the damp problems they'll have

I didn't think the house was THAT bad. I did lol slightly when the woman was trying to convince Kevin Smug (and herself) that the blocks had a sparkle to them so it was all OK.

They were asking for trouble the moment the architect's plan had a curve on it. Always so much more time consuming to build and therefore vastly more expensive.

Agree that the worktop was absolutely shocking, and that despite their claims at the end, the underlying feeling I got was that they were both quite disappointed in the whole end result, especially her.

And yes enough with the eco-nonsense houses. It was OK when it was one or two such project per series, it was vaguely different and interesting, and you could pat them on the head and think "there there, well done, now let's see a proper house next week". Unproven eco mumbo jumbo every week, especially when it adRAB stupid cost, like quadruple glazed mega windows, is getting very tedious.

I'm an architect myself and have designed a fair few colleges. Sometimes a decision is made to omit ceilings to save money. Its a false economy but even more challenging is the effort involved to co-ordinate services like pipes and cable trays to actually appear aesthetically pleasing.

Its a tremendous challenge because apart from the architect, every single other person involved in that chain, from the decision made, to the hanging of a light fitting is singualrly not interested in what it looks like. M&E Consultants, heating engineers, installers, electricians and so on.
When you try to have exposed fittings, every thing has to be perfect, all the bolts have to be cut to the same length, if a pipe enters a wall it has to be in the centre of a block else you just get a blob of cement and mastic.

have a look up next time you are in a new M&S store. They are usually pretty good at it, but its still a bit "marmite."

Lovely worktop that. Just imagine all the bacteria and assorted dirt it will gather over time.

I'd be annoyed if a resurfaced road turned out like that.

And as for the wind turbine why not stick with the original one. Changing your mind and spending a fortune on an unproven technology is crazy.

The aluminium roof pretty much made it look like an incinerator.

Can't be 100% Sure but I just described the building to someone as it had left it's mark on me. :o

They said they saw it as the Mystery House in a CotswolRAB edition of Escape To The Country. :D

So I think , either she's done another one or Hel n' Chris are trying to sell up . Maybe to a traditional house or back to the smoke ? :p
