GPS with T5?

I did a search but didn't find anything exactly on this... pardon me if it's a rehash of a common thread.

I am a PDA newbie, just got a T5 for Christmas and am loving it.... I chose the T5 because it appeared to be the top of the line Palm model, but since getting it I am getting the impression that it is maybe not compatible with GPS receivers?

They are all over the place for PocketPC's, and I see lots of them around for the T3 and below... but they never show the T5 as being compatible.

Did I buy the wrong PDA for my needs?

Is there a gps receiver out there for the T5 or am I out of luck?

There will be GPS recievers compatible with the the T5 - there just aren't any out yet. OS 5.4 only exists in the T5 and the software will have to be rewritten for GPS receiver programs to work with the new OS. This is one of the problems you face when you decide to buy the newest model of any gadget.

Jim,

OS 5.4 does exist on the Treo 650 as well.......;)

I thought that P1 had a GPS Bundle but I've read where TomTom is supposed to be releasing a GPS "bundle" shortly after the 1st of the year.

The Bluetooth option for a GPS unit will be your best first choice because of the unique connector of the T5 and the Treo 650 - this will cause "serial" style interfaces to be delayed even further. I read a report where someone got the TomTom software on the T5 but not all of the stuff was working - obviously a condition caused by the new OS as Jim Cooke pointed out.

Thanks guys.... this is a far better answer than "you're out of luck." I was looking at one of the HP PocketPC's, which was very very nice, but would have cost over $1000 with the GPS kit - and for that much I can buy a notebook.

I like the T5 so far.... not quite as easy to use as my old Sony Clie, but then I've only had it 4 days now.

Moose,

Does the Treo 650 have the GPS locator feature built-in? I know this is going to be a requirement for all cell phones in the US by 2006 but, if the Treo already has the GPS software, it might make it easier to get the data back out of the phone as well. I know that the 650 also has OS 5.4 but it seems to be a slightly different flavor since it doesn't seem to have all the bugs in the T5 but adds some new one of it's own. I wonder if there's a different subversion of 5.4 used in the two different devices?

Jim

To the best of my knowledge it does....I even think that the 600 does but there is no option to check it or change it as on some of the other Sprint phone's I have seen.

I would think that you are correct in a different subversion of the OS for the 650. But there are guys over at TreoCentral that are hacking the T3,T5 wifi card to get it to work and also hacking the DUN feature of the Sprint phone (which is disabled by Sprint) in order to use the phone for unlimited data as a modem. The 600's original OS was 5.2.1h but shortly after PalmOne took control they dropped the h - of course Handspring reference.

It looks like I won't get to find out....I think we are going towards Blackberry 7100t and therefore I'll have to learn a new platform.

I usually monitor at TreoCentral and very seldom post because of the lack of friendly's over there but it's interesting reading regarding the 650.

Well it all arived today.

Switched it on and it all worked

Very easy fast no problems.

a much better system than my old M515 & magellan

I have been using my T5 with the Fortuna Clip On BT GPS for both Mapopolis and Fugawi navigation programs. Fugawi auto connects to the Fortuna when the application is started but Mapopolis needs to be told which BlueTooth device to connect to every time, a bit of a pain.

Hi Gearcam,

I read your post with great interest, because I have just ordered a T5 and would also like to buy the Fortuna Clip-on. I want to use Copilot + FlightMaster software on my T5. I know you said you are using ViaMichelin on your T5, but can you think of any reason why I might have problems?

Thanks -
Steve (another Steve :D )

To be honest NO it works great almost boring.

The only problem i have is with the T5 running out of memory you have to be a little carful with the map size and keep the memory clear there are programs to do this which i need to investigate.

Als Michelin have just relesed a new version which is supposed to be better and tested on the T5 which my version is not recomended but works great.

Good luck

Steve

I have this combination and it works well.

The GPS comes with a copy of DeLorme's Street Atlas 5005 Handheld (which gives you maps of the USA.)

I also use the GPS with Handmap and GPS-Compass software.
