GPS use causes phone crash (N8)

Hmm,

It seems that every time I try to use the GPS function on my N8 the phone restarts itself.

Ovi maps crashes every time I use it. The Sports Tracker app also crashes out after a couple of minutes of use. Has anyone else had similar problems?

Also when the phone does restart, it seems like there are two types of "restarts". One where the phone goes to the white NOKIA splash screen then directly back to the home screen. The other seems to be more of a complete restart where it goes through the whole start up routine with the "hands" and the start up tone.

Any ideas?

I don't have those problems (and I run both Ovi Maps, and Sports Tracker), but I will try to help you out.

Menu > Settings > Application Settings > Positioning >

Under Positioning methods I have:
Assisted GPS, Integrated GPS, Wi/Fi Network, and Network based all checked. Only Bluetooth GPS is not checked.

Postitioning Server use:
Set to automatic.
I also set supl.nokia.com as a server, with an access point of internet.windmobile.ca (should be your cell phone provider internet access point).
I have a second address setup, which I think is the default that came with the phone, and begins with h-slp

Hopefully that helps.

I had same issue with previous version of the Ovi Maps or any other app that uses GPS. It was fixed with latest version of the Ovi Maps. Reason for the crashes ware setting for Wi-Fi positioning method. Try using only Integrated GPS and A-GPS as positioning method.

Also if you for any reason use google maps satellite server address under positioning, at least Ovi Maps will crash. I have had zero problems so far with Ovi Maps 3.06 beta, in fact I really like it a lot. The recaclulating is really fast if you stray from the route and overall it is more than enough for my needs.

Hmm,

I've tried both set of settings and still get crashes. In fact I'm starting to see more of them seemingly unrelated to the use of the GPS. Opera mobile and also seem to cause them. Ugh, I don't want to have to hard reset this thing or have to send it into Nokia.

What version of ovi maps are you using? Also have you installed any other programs like 3rd party or beta apps? Anything else that uses GPS and finally if you're using an earlier version of ovi maps than the latest beta of 3.06, install the 3.06 even though it is a beta. There are plenty of improvements and the latest version is actually very stable.

Anything stand out?

GPS on the N8 is probably one the best that I've used on any phone. If they can get search for destinations by voice (like the e72 on Google Maps) then it would be the best GPS phone IMO. I've gotten instant lock indoors where many other phones have failed.

Give Accuweather an uninstall and if that doesn't work then you gotta find the needle in your app haystack. Personally I would do a factory reset and only keep the apps that I actually need/use since any phone can be taken down by a rogue app...
