GPS track displaying software

I've got an offroading event coming up here in a few weeks and thought I could ask the whole for some advice. I have 2 tracking files that I want to have displayed on my N97 mini at the same time while I'm driving down these ORV trails. Please keep in mind that I will be in a heavily wooded area where internet and cellular service will be non-existent. Is there such software for 3rd or 5th that that will display my tracks and use the GPS at the same time?

I have tried converting and importing the tracking files to Ovi Maps, but that is VERY hard to do as I have several thousand waypoints that mark the trails.

I have also tried Google maps to do this, and it is possible, BUT I can only display one track at a time. I need both loaded in order to see the entire ORV trail system.

Offroading sounds fun.

I use nokia sport tracker for hiking. You can upload the data and overlay it on a map later.

There is also some java tracking software http://gpsed.com/

I used it once, i think it allows you to export the log in a more standard format.
 
Tracking:
Consider using BuddyWay - they have a native Symbian app that tracks your position and logs it (uploading it later when you get back to 'civilization). The app is VERY lightweight and smoothly multitasks even on my VERY underpowered phone. It lets you simultaneously run a GPS app like Ovi.

Mapping:
This one's trickier. Since you're not online, can you leverage the following (... but it wouldn't be live)
- Ovi Maps saved maps on the device
- BuddyWay (or anything else) exported to kml or something similar (a track file) (ETA: you can ONLY do this on the BuddayWay website AFTER uploading your tracks - so when you get back home!)
- Reimport that as a 'saved' route into Ovi Maps with a MASSIVE number of waypoints?

Likely not, but just fishing and brainstorming here.
 
maker;13963303']Yeah, this was what I was trying to do and Ovi Maps wasn't co operating even after tapping in about 500/3500 waypoints. I do not even need a map, I just want my tracks to show up and a dot showing where I am next to the tracks. Google Maps can do this, but only one tracking file at a time.:disappoin
 
So you want to see the ORV trail while seeing how you are tracking against it?

Two options that I can think of: Viewranger (http://www.viewranger.com/) and Trimble Outdoors (http://www.trimbleoutdoors.com/TrimbleOutdoors.aspx).

I've used Viewranger for hiking and I believe you can display a trail using a gpx or similar file loaded onto the phone. All the map tiles are also on the phone, so cellular service is not a requirement.

I've also tried Trimble Outdoors but the current version available for S60 does not allow you to load maps on the phone (contrary to their description of using their Adventure Planner software on the PC and uploading files). Their focus is definitely more on the iPhone and Android market.
 
maker;13964885']Awesome, Viewranger is exactly what I've been looking for! My tracks imported perfectly and the maps don't look half bad either. Better yet, the "open street" maps that are included display the trails that I will be heading down so I can't get lost! :clapping:

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions! This is a gold mine for anyone doing any type of hiking, trail riding or biking and want to track where they go and display their tracks for future use.
 
Agreed - a nice software thread for the kinds of activities *I'm* interested in, after a LONG spell of (important to some but not me) discussions about Nokia Messaging, email, Social crap^H^H^H^Hwebsite queries and issues.

Great looking app - have to see if my 6650 has the oomph to handle it :)

Also check out AFTrack. Seems like this author went to a LOT of trouble to make this app. At least based on a quick glance of the page and screenshots!

S60v3 (yay, me) and v5 (you) versions available. Worth a try as well!
You can pick and pre-download maps, tiles, tracks and what-not. Uses an external Bluetooth GPS by default, but v3 and v5 plugins to use the internal (both unsigned, need signing) are available.
Very serious tool!

I bought Viewranger about 2 years ago through the company's website, not Ovi Store. I would suggest going to their website to see the current pricing: http://shop.viewranger.com/products.php?category_id=24

I purchased the Token Pack where you can download the specific map tiles you might need for a given area. I have yet to use up my allotment of 333 tiles (I think I still have about 200 left).

The only other HoFo member that I've come across that uses Viewranger is ukjeeper. He's the one that made me aware of the product, but I haven't seen many posts by him lately.
 
thanks tncc01. I was looking a VR website. I see you can buy whole maps of certain parks or states. I also saw the option for token packs. Are you able to download tiles via wifi, instead of 3g. Example: If I was going to go hiking 2hrs from my house. Could I download the maps that I need via wifi before I leave my house? (I dont have unlimited data)

I was also seeing different scale size maps. Which one do you have?
 
Yes, you can download the maps via wifi. That's how I do it since I also don't have an unlimited data plan.

The best scale for hiking is the 1:24,000. This equates to the 7.5-minute USGS Quadrangle maps.

After you download the map tiles, you may have to go to Options>Data Manager>Maps>Mercator Lat Lon and open the tile from there to get it to show on the screen. You may not need to do this, and should only have to do it the one time when you first start using the app.

My only negative about this program is that the map files act like images as you zoom in and out, i.e., you start to loose resolution on the screen once you zoom in past a certain point, unlike, say, Ovi Maps, where you can zoom in as close as you want and the lines on the screen stay at the same resolution. This is only a minor issue since you can see enough of the topographic detail of the spot you are without having to zoom in too much.
 
hey there, i got a env touch an i was wondring if i can track its gps from my pc for free is there a way to do this? i tend to trop it from time to time an if i had a dime for each time i had to spend hrs looking for it id be rich. an im not to keen on the idea of gluing a key finder to it.
